Whether parakeet or parrot – birds are among the most popular domestic animals of the Germans. And not without reason, because the feathered flatmates are considered to be frugal and relatively easy to care for and yet communicative and sociable. So birds don’t ask for walks in wind and weather and they don’t dispute their owner’s place on the sofa. And yet they bring life into the apartment with their chirping. Before the purchase, however, bird owners should think about the species-appropriate attitude of the animals. A cage does not meet the needs of most bird species. They need space in order to be able to keep up with their urge to move and to live together with other species. An aviary offers them these possibilities.

Everything for animals: Aviary Video Guide

No matter if small Piepmatz or big parrot – all birds have a natural need to open their wings and fly freely through the air. A small cage usually deprives them of this possibility and is therefore not species-appropriate. In particular parrots living in captivity need much place around itself to move, play and be able to fly not least due to their body size. Otherwise, they are unhappy and will behave abnormally. This is manifested, for example, by aggressiveness, the destruction of toys and parts of the cage. A spacious aviary is therefore the best method of keeping most birds. It offers the animals the necessary free space and, depending on the equipment, various play and employment options.

Aviaries are available for indoor and outdoor use. Those who have the necessary space in the garden, on the balcony or the terrace can create a species-appropriate home for their feathered friends outdoors. Even in winter, keeping birds in the fresh air is no problem for most bird species. These include, for example, budgerigars, many parrot species, nymph parakeets and quails. On the contrary: they can produce important vitamin D in sunshine and cover their usually high oxygen demand. However, the aviary should have an interior, not be too draughty and have a heating lamp or radiant heater that provides heat during nights with ice-cold temperatures. An alternative to the permanently installed wooden aviary for the garden are metal aviaries standing on rollers. Although they do not offer as much space as large aviaries, they can easily be moved back and forth between the home and the garden. So the birds can refuel sun and fresh air in the warm season and enjoy the warmth of the dwelling in the winter.

However, there are other points to consider before setting up a bird aviary in the garden. If many birds are to be moved into the aviary or socialised at the same time, it is advisable to consult a bird expert. Also the size of the aviary needs an exact planning depending upon kind and number of the birds, since the space requirement of each bird species is differently large. In addition, it is advisable to ask the municipality whether an aviary in the garden is permitted or whether a permit is required. Last but not least, the conversation with the direct neighbours should be sought. Birds can be noisy during the day and at night and this can sometimes be problematic for the neighbourhood.

The issue of health should also play a major role in the purchase of an aviary. Since the birds live at times or completely in the open air, a closer contact to other animals like game-birds and Nagern arises. In order to protect the animals from being infected with diseases from other animals, a conversation with the veterinarian is recommended. He will advise on whether vaccinations may be necessary and can give advice on how best to protect birds from contact with pathogens. Once all the points have been checked, nothing stands in the way of the birds moving into a spacious aviary.
