What is an ECG device? The contraction of the heart – the contraction – is accompanied by electrical excitation. This specific pattern is repeated with each heartbeat. With the help of electrodes on the skin, the changes in the voltage of the heart are derived. The ECG device captures the signals in order to initially amplify them and then display them as a curve. The result is a printout on paper or can be seen by the doctor on the monitor. Both the electrocardiogram for recording heart function and the electrocardiography procedure are abbreviated to ECG. The world’s first electrocardiogram was produced by the British physiologist Augustus D. Wailer 1882 with his dog. The actual technical and theoretical breakthrough was achieved by the Dutch physician Willem Einthoven. In 1924 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work on the electrocardiogram. Everyday medical life today, especially in internal medicine, is unthinkable without ECG equipment. An electrocardiogram sometimes provides the physician with vital information about the heart health of the patient. An electrocardiogram shows diseases such as heart attack, cardiac arrhythmia or heart muscle inflammation. The ECG is divided into 3 forms. The resting ECG is used for routine diagnostics and is also part of the basic cardiological examination in emergencies. The developed devices are modern and stable for transportable use. Side effects can occur with a stress ECG, which may manifest themselves in pain, shortness of breath, paleness, nausea and dizziness. The devices are partly equipped with a bicycle ergometer. The long-term ECG device records the heart rhythm over 24 hours. In particular, sporadically occurring disturbances can be better detected with this method. The patient wears a so-called recorder for this purpose. Subsequently, the derivations are evaluated by the physician using special software. What ECG devices are available? A mobile 1-channel ECG device is ideal for self-monitoring on the move or at home. An example of this is the ME 80 from the Beurer company. It determines the heart rhythm in 30 seconds and gives feedback on the current measurement. Using a USB plug, the recordings can also be stored in the PC, graphically displayed and, if necessary, printed out for a visit to the doctor. The device is particularly suitable for patients with pre-existing conditions such as heart attacks and strokes, high blood pressure and diabetes, if the cholesterol level is too high and the patient is overweight. Preloads in the family can also be a reason to decide in favour of a mobile device. It is positioned on the left side of the body, about 5 cm below the heart for measurement. A total of 99 electrocardiograms can be recorded. These records can be used to assess the course over a longer period of time. Mobile long-term devices for doctors are offered by leading manufacturers such as Omron, Schiller and Nihon Kohden. Top-class devices are the Omron Heart Scan, Nihon Kohden Cardiofax and Schiller Cardiovit. Suppliers of high-quality exercise ECG equipment for medical practices are Dr. Schmidt, COMEN, Biocare and EDAN. The CardioSecur from Personal MedSystems GmBH is a world first among medical products. It’s smartphone based. This allows the heart to be monitored anywhere and at any time. Recommendations for action are also given here. The user-friendliness enables the first results to be sent to the doctor within a minute, if necessary directly from the smartphone. The high-quality 12-channel electrocardiogram is distinguished by its minimal design. The innovative electrode system also has a clear and reduced appearance. The costs are a self-payer service.
