Examination gloves belong to the so-called disposable gloves and serve medical doctors and patients alike as protection against infections. A wide variety of factors such as the transfer of body fluids, blood, bacteria or germs are undesirable risk factors in health care. Examination gloves therefore contribute primarily to minimising these risks.

An important characteristic of examination gloves is their quality. This is usually indicated on the boxes containing the disposable gloves. But which designation stands for which quality? Primarily disposable gloves are divided into three manufacturing qualities, the so-called AQL. AQL describes the accepted quality level and gives information about the tightness of the gloves. An AQL value of 4.0 means that the manufacturing quality is high and meets industrial standards. The value 1.5, on the other hand, corresponds to medical standards and has a very high manufacturing quality. The highest manufacturing quality is described as maximum, corresponds to the highest standard and is indicated with an AQL value of 0.65. The highest quality is achieved by the use of a high quality control system.

Examination gloves are available in different designs. Primarily they differ with regard to the materials used. In order to find suitable gloves, advantages and disadvantages should be weighed up.

Classic examination gloves are made of latex. The decisive factors here are different material properties and a high level of wearing comfort. They are extremely elastic, have a good fit and a high tear resistance. A disadvantage, however, is the high risk of allergic reactions and the permeability for different oils and solvents. Nitrile gloves have also established themselves as an alternative to latex examination gloves. They combine the positive properties of the latex versions, but cause allergic reactions much less frequently.

From the patient’s point of view, there is another, third alternative that is very popular. Disposable vinyl gloves feel much more comfortable on the skin. However, they have more negative properties than latex or nitrile gloves. For example, there is a risk that plasticizers contained in the gloves may be harmful to health. Furthermore, the fit is often perceived as uncomfortable because the flexibility is very low. They are also suspected of not being completely impermeable to viruses and bacteria.

Caution is advised when handling latex gloves in medical professions. Some variants of these examination gloves are equipped with a special powder. This powder should ensure that the gloves are easy to put on even with sweaty or wet hands. At the same time, however, the powder poses a risk that is now regarded as too high, which is why it is forbidden to use it. The reason for this can be found in the latex proteins contained, which can accumulate on the powder. If the gloves are taken off again after use, powder and the adhering latex proteins swirl through the air. Since these proteins can trigger allergies, this effect is extremely risky, especially in medical facilities.
