How consistently the occlusal splint is ultimately worn determines whether the dental arches are damaged or not. The masticatory musculature can create immense pressure, which especially damages the occlusal surfaces of the cusps. This abrasion results in an abnormal tooth position, so that the individual teeth of both jaws no longer coincide correctly. The occlusal surfaces are thus imbalanced, which is why jaw problems and jaw joint problems occur.

Such irregularities can be compensated with splint therapy. The various complaints are eliminated – but the oral parafunction (pressing, grinding teeth) is not. If the ‘crunch splint’ is worn for a longer period of time, the plastic material suffers similar damage to the original chewing surfaces. Depending on the material and chewing intensity, the occlusal splint must be replaced within a period of between about half a year and five years. Orthodontists and dentists therefore recommend targeted relaxation therapy/exercises in order to reduce oral parafunctions in the long term.

Major damage to the temporomandibular joint and teeth can be avoided if those affected are able to consciously perceive nocturnal teeth grinding and actively counteract it. Relaxation techniques such as yoga or autogenic training, progressive relaxation and special sports activities can help to live a calmer and more relaxed life. Sometimes warm baths in the evening or a late walk against teeth grinding or pressing can already help and contribute to a good night’s sleep.
