Iron and steel are among the most frequently used materials in human life. Cars, machines, parts of buildings and even furniture very often consist at least partly of iron. However, although iron is found as a material almost everywhere in our environment, it is a comparatively sensitive material. The element iron is quite base and therefore comparatively reactive. Nevertheless, it is a popular material which is relatively easy to process and at least mechanically very stable. To compensate for the chemical reactivity, various methods are used, such as the production of alloys or sealing the surface with weak or non-reactive substances and agents. However, these methods only protect iron to a limited extent. A protective layer can scratch and is then completely useless, alloys are more resistant than pure iron, but they also corrode over time. If an iron workpiece is now corroded, the question arises how to protect it from total destruction. The solution is rust converters.

Over time, iron reacts with oxygen from its environment. If the environment contains relatively little water, corrosion is not a major problem. The result is iron III oxide, which itself is very inert and therefore stable. It forms a thin layer on the iron and protects it from further corrosion. However, this case occurs very seldom, since the natural humidity of the air is usually sufficient to produce a complex compound of iron-II-oxide, iron-III-oxide and water instead of iron-III-oxide, which is also called iron hydroxide – rust. This has a completely different structure than pure ferric oxide and therefore does not form an unreactive protective layer. Rust is a voluminous and porous substance, which is similar to a sponge. Here, oxygen can easily penetrate and further attack the undamaged iron deep inside, at the border to the undamaged iron. How far previous rust promotes further rusting through is discussed, but rust is at least hygroscopic, i.e. it draws water from the environment, whereby at least more further rust can develop. Usually there are at least small amounts of different salts in the environment that can penetrate with the water and actually accelerate rusting. This results in new rust until there is no iron present which has not yet corroded and the workpiece is ultimately completely destroyed.

The effective component of rust converters is phosphoric acid. Since it is a liquid, it can also penetrate into the spongy rust and act up to the base of the non-corroded iron. The phosphoric acid reacts with the rust and further converts it. Iron-III-phosphate and water are formed from iron hydroxide and phosphoric acid. Since iron-III-phosphate does not have the porous structure of the rust, the material loses its excess volume again and lays itself as an equally unreactive protective layer on the previously rusted workpiece. The water, which is released during the reaction, escapes again from the workpiece and evaporates in the environment. What remains is a greyish tarnish but rust-free workpiece protected against rust. There is not much to consider when buying rust converters. It is important that enough rust transformers are applied so that the rust can be completely transformed. Products that are to be washed off after treatment should be avoided.
