Probably the most classic sports drink is of course water. You may always drink this, but you should pay attention to the carbonic acid content. Carbon dioxide burdens the stomach, which some runners find unpleasant. Before and during training you should therefore switch to low-carbon water. This does not irritate the stomach as much and also avoids annoying hiccups. However, only water is not ideal either: sufficient sodium must also be added to the body.

Due to their high sugar and therefore calorie content, soft drinks are among the rather unsuitable drinks for athletes. These include all hypertonic drinks such as energy drinks, undiluted fruit juices or soft drinks. These have a higher concentration of so-called “dissolved particles” than human blood plasma. As a result, the body must first dilute the fluid before it can be absorbed by the organism. Hypertonic drinks or soft drinks therefore tend to cause even more thirst than they can quench it

In contrast to the soft drinks described above, isotonic drinks, also known as isodrinks, have the same concentration of dissolved particles as blood plasma. This promotes a particularly fast digestion of the liquid. Isodrinks are best suited for high-performance athletes, as they can immediately replace water and energy losses that occur during training sessions. The drink can also be used in popular sports, but is not as absolutely necessary as in competitive sports.

Behind the somewhat unknown name there are drinks like the most common “Powerade”. An electrolyte drink is very suitable for very long endurance periods, but is not absolutely necessary for a shorter workout. But beware: Electrolyte drinks that are too concentrated extract water from the body. In individual cases this can lead to nausea and vomiting.

Smoothies are becoming more and more popular. If you decide to buy this drink, you should rather put on your own hand instead of using the packaged, mostly sugared smoothie fruit juices from the supermarket. It is better to mix your favourite fruit yourself with other ingredients. You can choose between herbs, vegetables, yoghurt or ice cream. There are no limits to the imagination. A smoothie is ideal for regenerating the body, especially directly after sport. It is supplied with important vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins. The food is also easily digestible due to its liquid form.

The best comes at the end – for many experts, the classic apple juice spritzer is the ideal sports drink. Their composition is decisive: one third juice and two thirds sodium-rich mineral water supply the body with sufficient energy through an appropriate amount of sugar, salts and minerals.
