Altimeters are analogue or digital devices used to measure the height of objects, height differences between planes or a reference surface. These are used, for example, in mountaineering or as measuring instruments in aircraft. The measurement is carried out with sound or microwaves or laser beams. In the trade for private and commercial buyers there are often altimeters with chronometer, compass and thermometer. These are available in specialist watch shops, camping shops, sports shops and online shops.

Camping & Outdoor: Altimeter Video Guide

The height can be determined by changing the air pressure. The aneroid barometer, on the other hand, does not measure the air pressure, because the height above sea level. Adjustments are only made after about one kilometre. Even if the altitude temporarily does not correspond to the data of a GPS device or a mountain map, nobody has to panic or doubt the functionality of the altimeter. Then there is a drop in pressure, which indicates a change in the weather. The altimeter is adjusted correctly only once and always before the ascent. The display should show an odometer showing the distance already covered. With this measuring method, a deviation of 2 to 20 meters is possible.

A digital altimeter has a pressure sensor that is calibrated or temperature compensated. The method allows an accuracy with a maximum deviation of one meter. The sensors also work in combination with a GPS device, which can also be used separately as an altimeter. Whoever runs up and flies or falls down again with a parachute will use an analog metal box for the height measurement, which expands or contracts. The pressure conditions move the pointer, which is in the can and thus height differences between the point of the parachute and the earth’s surface can be measured. The scale shows the height difference in meters as well as feet. The maximum values are about 6,000 meters, since the parachute jump is hardly carried out from a greater distance

In airplanes and helicopters the altitude is displayed in feet. There are two measuring displays, because on the one hand the distance to the sea depth is shown and on the other hand the height difference between the flight altitude and the ground. The maximum height is 15,000 meters, which corresponds to 49,212.598 feet. To measure the altitude, the air pressure between the flying object and the sea or ground level is evaluated, which is an altitude measurement with a barometer. The exception is light aircraft, which mainly measure in metres, and aircraft from France and Russia also show the difference in altitude in metres. In order to use the altimeter, the pilot must adjust the gauges and set the altimeter to the current air pressure. Low temperatures lead to a high air density, which makes the engines more powerful and gives the pilot the guarantee that the runway length is sufficient to take off in time when the aircraft is fully occupied. At high temperatures this behaves exactly the other way round. Now the pilot is dependent on achieving a lower weight allowance in order not to exceed the length of the runway.

This results in the following curiosity that hardly any passenger is aware of and that the flight personnel communicate far too little. If a plane is fully booked in summer and passengers bring a lot of heavy baggage to the counter, baggage must always be held back because otherwise the pilot cannot take off. It is not uncommon for this to happen at the last moment, when the passengers are already sitting in the plane. The surprise waits at the destination airport when the luggage is not on the treadmill

TFA HiTrax Globe Altimeter Advantages: Altitude measuring range between 0 and 5,000 meters / barometer without battery and with manual setting

Ciclosport Alpine Advantages: Barometer integrated in clock / Temperature display / Time display / Health-relevant data display
Ckeyin altimeter 6in1advantages: Attachment to key ring / Weather data / Altitude differences from -2,300 to 29,500 meters / Thermometer / Air pressure display
Buyers should consider in advance what the altimeter is needed for and then decide on the range of functions. A chronometer can be one of the best companions on hikes, if several data are needed, if not only the altitude difference is relevant.
