Aquarium gravel is ideally suited for a natural reproduction of an underwater landscape and for a subsoil that is suitable for animals and plants. However, some differences are to be considered with the aquarium gravel. Starting with the colour design, the grain size and the ingredients that the gravel releases into its environment, these are criteria that play a major role in the selection of aquarium gravel. However, too colorful and conspicuous gravel can visually distract from the inhabitants of the aquarium and also disturb the overall harmony. In the following some important facts to a floor design with aquarium gravel.
When granulating aquarium gravel, it is important to always keep in mind the fish and plants that are supposed to animate the aquarium.
In the case of small fish that are close to the bottom in search of food, the gravel must have a very small grain size. The transition from sand to gravel is gliding in this size. Even underwater plants with very fine roots need sand or fine gravel. A grain size of 1 – 2mm is the right size for this. With this grain size there are also no too large gaps in which dirt and waste materials and feed could settle.
A medium grain size of 2 – 8 mm is suitable for larger fish. These stones are heavy enough that they cannot be moved so easily by the fish. Also, with this grain size, a ground cleaning is possible. Even larger plants need more space between the pebbles to form their roots. Even larger grains are used to form screes and gravel caves. However, these areas require more maintenance, as more dirt particles and waste can seep away.
An uncontrolled mixture of small and larger granulations can lead to a strong compaction of the aquarium bottom. This endangers the flushing of the floor.
With all grain sizes, care should be taken that all stones are rounded. Aquarium gravel has been cleaned before packing. A supplementary rinsing before filling into the aquarium can not harm, however.
In the case of aquarium gravel, care must be taken to ensure that it does not contain too much lime. Although lime is a natural mineral, too high a lime content in the water can increase the pH value in a previously well-adjusted aquarium and thus harm animals and plants. An advantage of aquarium gravel is that useful bacteria can settle in the spaces between the gravel to ensure the biological balance in the aquarium.
The disadvantage of these gaps is that fish faeces and uneaten feed can seep away and form a sludge that significantly impairs water quality. A gravel substrate must therefore be cleaned regularly and professionally.
A substrate of aquarium gravel should be about 6cm thick so that it fulfils its functions in the aquarium. If you follow all these rules, you will enjoy your aquarium with aquarium gravel and you will be able to observe the inner life with leisure.
