The term assembly foam covers various foams that are used in the installation, bonding and backfilling of prefabricated building components. In most cases this foam is based on polyurethane. This is why assembly foam is often referred to as PU foam. In addition, there are some other common names for assembly foam, which can vary depending on the specific application of the individual foams. Assembly foam, for example, is also referred to as construction foam, insulating foam or insulating foam, as well as filling foam or frame foam. All these foams have a very high adhesive strength and adhere to numerous materials that can be joined or securely fixed with their help. The foam, which is usually supplied in cans, is expelled from the container using a propellant gas. For this purpose, butane and propane, among others, are used. At the same time, this gas ensures that the original volume of the Monday foam multiplies as soon as it leaves the can. Therefore a lot of feeling and experience is required for the exact dosage of construction foam

In addition to its adhesive consistency, the foam is initially very soft when it exits the can. It can therefore be injected into even the smallest cavities and gaps under the pressure generated by the propellant gas. This is achieved by means of a tube that is either supplied as a disposable product in the assembly foam can or as part of a special application device for construction foams. After a few hours in the air, the assembly foam reacts with the air and becomes increasingly firm until it has an extremely hard consistency. Then the foam is cured. It can be edited in this state. For example, you can cut off too much material with a sharp cutter knife. The assembly foam connects all components wetted with it safely and permanently and withstands high loads. It is therefore also suitable for permanent assembly of heavy components. Since it increases its volume after the outlet, care must be taken not to use too large a quantity. Especially in narrow cavities and during the assembly of components, this can lead to the position or shape of the latter being influenced by the pressure built up

A rough distinction can be made between two types of installation foam: one-component installation foam and two-component installation foam. Most products available in aerosol cans are one-component foam. Before using the can, its individual components must be mixed together by shaking in order to ensure the desired inflation reaction of the assembly foam after leaving the can. The cans contain a metal mixing ball for this purpose. Since the mounting foam swells the better the more moisture it has available, wetting the surfaces to be foamed with a little water is highly recommended. Two-component assembly foam, on the other hand, requires no moisture to cure. The cans are supplied with an additional hardener with which the foam must be mixed. Such foams cure much faster and harder than one-component assembly foams. The curing of these two-component assembly foams can therefore be better controlled

Polyurethane in hardened condition is not hazardous to health. But you should still be careful when using mounting foam. If fresh, even softer foam is applied to textiles, for example, it can hardly be removed due to its sticky consistency and leaves permanent stains. In addition, it should of course not come into contact with skin and mucous membranes. The tanks are also under pressure and the propellants are usually flammable. For this reason, installation foam should not be used near open flames. Multiple-use foam guns must be cleaned immediately after use with suitable agents, otherwise the foam will cure and render the nozzles and lines of the tool unusable for further use.

Probably the best known areas of application for installation foam are the installation of windows and the permanent fixing of door frames. Furthermore, construction foam can also be used to fill cavities – also in vehicles – or to fill small damaged areas in construction. The possible types of use are very diverse. However, it must be noted that the cured foam is resistant to moisture, chemicals and solvents, but has no UV stability. It should therefore not be used in places exposed to the sun.
