The average beamer lamp has a service life of approximately 2500 to 3000 operating hours. On some projectors it can be read how many hours the beamer lamp was switched on in total. However, this display is not required because the user can find out for himself when it is time to change the lamp again. When this begins to weaken, it is reflected in a darker image. Also it comes to blurred contrasts. In addition, a yellow cast in the projected image is common with older lamps. The slow darkening of the image is noticeable from about 1500 operating hours. Usually the user of the beamer does not notice this at all. The luminous flux can easily be measured in order to check the performance of the beamer lamp. In the specialized trade there is a Lux meter for approx. 35EUR. Now the beamer lamp only has to be switched on, the brightness set to 100% and directed to a white background. The luminous flux can then be measured at a number of points and compared with the lumen number specified by the manufacturer
The running time of a lamp does not always end with the darkening of the image or yellowing. In some cases there is a loud bang after which the lamp no longer works at all. Once this has happened, it is generally not advisable to use a new lamp yourself. Instead, you should contact the manufacturer’s service department or another professional to inspect the projector. It is possible that the interior of the beamer has also been affected and that it is therefore not possible or sensible to replace the lamps.
When the time comes to replace the lamp in the projector, the unit should cool down completely first. The lamp may have become very hot during operation, which may cause burns to the skin or even a fire if it is removed. The beamer must always be switched off and disconnected from the mains before the lamp is removed. The cover plate can then be removed from the device. With some beamers this also works without the help of tools. Then safety screws must be loosened, which works best with a Phillips screwdriver. Now the lamp housing must be screwed on and the wire bow must be lifted. Now the lamp unit is detached and the lamp can be replaced. But we must be careful here. Never let your fingers touch the new lamp. The heat generated by the projector during operation can burn the grease and damage the beamer lamp
