A basic distinction is made between historical and modern combat knives.

Historical combat knives were designed for close combat and were constructed accordingly: They were rather narrow and ground on both sides. Furthermore, a distinction was made here between cutting and stabbing weapons, whereby cutting weapons tend to have a curved shape and stabbing weapons are predominantly straight.

Modern combat knives, on the other hand, are mainly used as tools, since melee weapons are rarely needed nowadays. These multi-purpose tools have a rather wide blade, which is sharpened only on one side. Often these knives are kept in black colour. The blades are often equipped with a saw tooth or serrated edge to optimise handling. In this way different materials such as wood, sheet metal or fibrous material can be cut and processed more easily and quickly.

Although the German Weapons Act does not explicitly specify combat knives in detail, it does provide basic information: Knives with a blade length of over twelve centimetres are prohibited, as are cutting and thrust weapons. This means that many combat knives are subject to this regulation – anyone who nevertheless wishes to purchase such a weapon must report the purchase within two weeks. Moreover, in many cases the owner of a weapon possession card is necessary. Such weapons may not be carried at public events such as festivals!

The regulations in Germany are therefore relatively strict. Exceptions exist here, for example, in scenarios such as transport in closed containers and carrying with justified interest: A justified interest exists, among other things, if the combat knife is used for the practice of a sport or for the exercise of a profession.

Anyone wishing to purchase a combat knife should therefore inform themselves in advance about the legal basis. Failure to comply or negligence may result in a fine or even imprisonment. Furthermore, the purchase should always be made by reputable sellers – this is the only way to guarantee that the sale takes place in accordance with the law and that the purchased knife has the desired quality. Purchases via the so-called Darknet should therefore be avoided.
