In general, dog bicycle baskets are divided into two different types. This subdivision is due to the positioning of the baskets: there are models for front and rear. The latter are attached to the bicycle saddle/seat post or luggage rack. Dog bicycle baskets for the front are mounted on the handlebar head or on the handlebar. Alternatively, bicycle trailers are available, which are also available in a wide range of variants.

Dog bicycle baskets are usually made of willow, rattan, textile and plastic. Willow and rattan are characterised by the fact that they are natural materials which are light but nevertheless stable. These are woven baskets that provide a pleasant climate thanks to their air permeability. However, these models are not permanently weather resistant. Sun, rain, snow and frost always put the baskets over the course of time clearly. If the dog bicycle basket made of willow or rattan is set up permanently outdoors, it can become fragile or even mouldy. The braiding itself is optically very appealing but often not easy to clean.

Dog bicycle baskets made of synthetic textiles, such as polyester, combine relatively good weather resistance with light weight. Hereby the quadrupeds are protected from wind, snow and rain. Thanks to the covers, these models also offer some sun protection. However, it should be noted that the fabrics are not very stable. The necessary stability must come from the corresponding frame.

Plastic models are very light, quite stable and easy to clean. But also these variants can suffer with the time from the weather influences and become for example fragile or change colour. One drawback of these models is that no air can pass through the plastic shells. If it is a basket with covers, it will quickly become very warm and stuffy at warmer temperatures. On the other hand, these models are a good choice in snow and rain due to their protective properties.

In addition to a very wide selection of different colors and designs, dog bicycle baskets are also offered in different sizes. Usually the baskets are about 35 to 70 centimetres long. They vary in width and height. In most cases, the variants that can be mounted on the handlebars at the front are slightly smaller than the models for the carrier or saddle. Here it is important to note that the measurements must match the dog. There should still be enough space for the four-legged friend. It is also important to pay attention to the permissible weight. As a rule, bicycle baskets are offered for dogs weighing ten, twelve, 15 and 20 kilograms. For heavier dogs weighing up to 50 kilograms, a dog bicycle trailer is recommended. This means that even larger animals can be transported easily using the bicycle.
