The advantages and disadvantages of the chest harness only show up in the end in corresponding exceptional situations, in which the dog does not follow flawlessly and must be controlled over the leash. This shows the great strength of the chest harness, namely that it distributes the force exerted by the leash over a much larger area than a collar. This will brake the dog just as effectively, but no strong, punctual pressure on the throat of the animal. It is precisely this that is disproportionately more sensitive than other parts of the body and a high or regular pressure load due to the pull on the leash can lead to acute injuries or chronic complaints. This problem is simply not given with a breast harness, since it does not attach at all to the neck of the animal and can therefore not exercise any force at this point. Also in situations where the dog would not run away, but should be better controllable for his own safety, the chest harness is the better choice. However, it also has disadvantages. It restricts the dog’s freedom of movement more than a collar and can lead to misalignment of the front legs if it sits incorrectly.

As indicated above, a chest harness should only be put on the dog if the animal is ill-behaved, or situations are to be expected in which the dog must be intercepted. In all other cases a simple collar should be preferred. However, it is advisable in any case to get the dog used to both devices, if possible from a young age, so that it can be changed without any problems. When choosing the dog harness, especially if the animal is still growing, it is important to make sure that it sits correctly and it must be replaced as soon as it becomes too tight. Too tight a fit narrows the shoulders, causing the legs, and especially the paws, to point outwards. This malposition can lead to chronic problems in the long run. There is also a risk of the dog chafing if the chest harness is too tight. Even straps that are too narrow can lead to chafing.
