Reactive dogs make it difficult for their owners. Wherever there’s movement, they have to see what it is. They don’t listen to their masters anymore, they just run away. And once they are gone, it becomes difficult with commands to bring the dog back. Due to their special length, drag lines are suitable for training such dogs. They are available in different sizes – up to 30 m long. Unlike longlines for walking, however, they do not have a roll on which the line is pulled out and rolled up again. Only one hand loop, often also several loops of different lengths for better guidance. And in the end, of course, a karabiner to attach the leash to the dog harness.
Of course such lines can also be used for other purposes. For hunting, for example when looking for game, or also for walking. However, since they were manufactured for training purposes, dog owners make special demands on them. The material has to withstand a little. But it must also be handy. Sore palms or even pain in the shoulders of the holder are not uncommon. Loops are indispensable here, especially a hand loop at the beginning. Additional interventions, about halfway down the length, help to train the dog. Conventional towlines are mostly made of nylon, but there are also leather or PVC towlines. Because the training doesn’t only take place when the weather is fine, a good tow line must also be insensitive to wetness, in the best case water repellent. Nylon, for example, likes to soak up water – and can even get twice its original weight.
Originally, this material was intended to replace leather and was used in equestrian sports. But because it is very robust, it was soon also used for tow lines. Inside there is polyester, which is covered by a protective layer of polyurethane.
BioThane is particularly tear-resistant – even the necessary holes around the rivets do not tear so quickly. It is also resistant to tensile stress and weathering. The sheathing makes it nice and handy. Nevertheless, the surface is quite smooth. This makes BioThane dirt repellent, because in nature it grinds much less dirt with it. The leash doesn’t get stuck anywhere that often. While you still need gloves for non-rubberized nylon, this is omitted here. And BioThane comes in many different bright colors. Passers-by can then see the line better, the danger of stumbling or even entangling is less. The cleaning is very easy – just immerse it in water. Often a thorough wipe is sufficient.
The length you need depends on your goals. The size and weight of your dog, on the other hand, determine its width and strength, i.e. tear resistance. Good manufacturers indicate this in the product description. How many surgical loops do you need? Also consider the size of the intervention loops – if you have larger hands, larger loops are practical.
Processing: Pay particular attention to the ends – are they simply cut off or well sealed? Short-lived linen fringes quickly at this point. But also the welding seams at the end of the hand loop, the padding and above all the material of the karabiners decide about a good handling.
