For some years it has been modern again to deal intensively with medicinal plants and their powers. The works of Hildegard von Bingen and other herbalists from the Middle Ages were and are being reprinted, so that the old knowledge becomes accessible to a broad population. Medical studies are increasingly concerned with medicinal plants, and effects have already been proven for some of the traditional medicinal herbs. Feverfew is one of them: It contains the fat-soluble substance parthenolide, which positively influences the female cycle, can prevent pain and has anticonvulsant effects. However, since plants are natural products and the amount of the active ingredient contained in a tea or freshly consumed leaf varies greatly, caution should be exercised when self-medicating from your own garden. After all, herbal products can also trigger allergies and have side effects that should not be underestimated.

Drugstore articles: Feverfew Video Guide

The feverfew actually prefers warmer regions and was originally native to the south of the Alps. Ancient writings from Greece and Rome show that the herb was already used as a medicinal plant many hundreds of years ago. With the spread of the Christian orders, namely the Benedictine Sisters, the feverfew also came to Central and Northern Europe. Since the time of Charlemagne, it has been cultivated in many house and monastery gardens and has found its way into the wilderness. In the meantime, feverfew can also be found in Germany along roadsides, in meadows and rubble dumps and in bushes. The plant has many names. Originally it was given the Latin name Chrysanthemum parthenium, now it is called Tanacetum parthenium. Other older names are Parthenium and Matricaria parthenum, Matricaria febrifuga, in English feverfew and thanks to Carl von Linné Pyrethrum parthenium. The vernacular knows the feverfew today under the names crumb, shirt button, feverfew, crown usury flower, Roman chamomile, mother chamomile, maiden flower or sun eye.

Feverfew is so frugal that it is easy to grow in your own garden. The fresh leaves are used, of which one can eat a single one on a sandwich against migraine. Together with a headache diary, such treatment should be given every four weeks to relieve migraine. The leaves and flowers of the cabbage can also be dried and processed into tea. As tea, a teaspoon of the dried cabbage is brewed with boiling water and left to steep for five to ten minutes. Drinking three cups a day for several weeks should prevent menstrual cramps, make the cycle more even and even alleviate cramps and other menstrual complaints. You don’t have to grow and dry the herb yourself, it’s already packaged in the pharmacy. Feverfew is also sold in tea mixtures especially for migraine and is then usually mixed with lavender, meadowsweet, peppermint and orange blossoms. An alternative are herbal tinctures, which are also sold in pharmacies and contain standardised concentrations of the active ingredient parthenolide. The drops in alcoholic solution are used against migraine and should be taken according to the package insert.

All in all, feverfew is not yet as well known in Germany as a medicinal plant for migraine and gynaecological disorders. In any case, doctors are not allowed to issue prescriptions for herbal remedies. However, feverfew extract is also available in higher concentrations in capsules and tablets in drugstores and pharmacies. However, you should not take any medication of your own, as the active substances contained can lead to allergic reactions (feverfew is a composite flower) and are not without side effects. Children under the age of 12 as well as pregnant women and nursing mothers must not be treated with feverfew or an extract based on this plant due to lack of medical studies. Combination preparations containing feverfew extract in combination with high doses of magnesium or butterbur should also be taken with caution.
