A spade is a special type of shovel with a flat, mostly rectangular blade. This tool for soil cultivation and hole digging developed into the short version of the feldspar with fixed blade and folding spade. The folding spade originally had a metal spade handle and a blade connected by a hinge. Thanks to this movable connection, the implement can be folded up and thus requires little space. In former times the folding spade was also called a pioneer’s jumpsuit. Folding spades are also often equipped with a tip. The spade itself historically replaced the burial stick with which the soil had previously been worked. In large-scale agriculture, the spade itself was later replaced by the plough. In horticulture and other areas, however, the spade is still used today. The design of the folding spade opened up further areas of application

Camping & Outdoor: Folding spade Video Guide
For manual tillage, the spade has remained one of our most important tools. The spade was developed from the burial ground at the latest after man became sedentary. There were spade-like tillage implements made of wood or stone over 7,000 years ago, as finds of so-called wooden half-spades and stone spade leaves from the Neolithic period show. In the Bronze and Iron Ages, very specialised spade shapes were developed. Even today there are still many special forms of spade such as drainage spade, rode spade, peat-cutting spade, tree plant spade, hole spade or fork spade. In Roman antiquity, iron spades were used, which were already very similar to today’s spades. Finally, the folding spade is a rather recent invention. The first specimens probably did not exist until the late 19th or early 20th century.
Field and folding spade were and still are used for military purposes. Already in the First World War soldiers of different armies used feldspars to dig trenches. In close combat and in so-called trench warfare the spades were also used as close combat weapons. In 1938 the folding spade was used by the German Wehrmacht. He was called “Little Schanzzeug”. The feldspars originally used had a length of 50 centimetres. The folding spades were just as long when folded up, but had a length of 70 centimetres when folded out and were therefore easier to handle. The blade could be fixed in different positions. So these devices with a tip on the blade could also be used as a hoe. The German army folding spade was finally also copied by the Americans under the designation “M1943” and later further developed. The further developed variant from 1951, called “intrenching tool, combination”, had a further wood chipper. 1967 followed the improved version called “lightweight intrenching tool”. This folding spade is still used by the Bundeswehr today.
Many modern folding spade have two hinges. The second hinge is now located on the handle of the folding spade so that the machine can be folded to one third of its working size. A folding spade is an extremely practical tool and can be used in many ways outside the military. A folding spade is indispensable for camping, for example, or for various outdoor activities. With a folding spade in the boot you are always well equipped when there is no more progress in the snow or mud. In order to get away from the military use of folding spades, these are today also called camping spades. In the folding spade comparison & comparison, the model from Inet-Trades scored best. The olive green folding spade has been certified to be highly stable. Second place is taken by the military folding spade from Fobachi, which has an additional hoe and is ideal as a multifunctional tool for outdoor use. Both models come with a carrying bag.
Other well tested folding spade models are the Uvistar Mini Shovel Light Set and the CON:P folding spade with belt bag. Next comes the AOS Outdoor folding spade and the Relaxdays folding spade, shovel and hoe set. The Timetop model, a multifunctional machine with folding spade and hoe for garden and camping, also received good marks. The folding spades of the Xclou and Explorer brands also achieved similarly good ratings.
