DIY articles: Gas detector Video Guide

Gas detectors are first of all a “subcategory” of conventional fire detectors that sound the alarm in the event of a fire to evacuate people. The gas detector, also known as a smoke or fire detector, triggers an alarm when the concentration of hazardous combustion gases, such as carbon monoxide, with its hazardous properties (colorless, tasteless and odorless) is extremely combustible and highly toxic. Carbon monoxide can occur, for example, if wood is “wrongly” burnt in the fireplace. Carbon monoxide can also be produced in lethal concentrations in heating systems, gas stoves, gas heaters or instantaneous water heaters that run on gas. Carbon dioxide has similar hazards and is also highly toxic in high concentrations. Rapid death from suffocation, among other things, may result. The gas detectors are particularly effective because they can be used in warm or dusty rooms and are “superior” to heat detectors or smoke alarms, for example. These toxic gases mentioned above therefore pose a real danger, from which one should absolutely protect oneself. In order to choose the right gas detector, you should first find out exactly what type of gas is used, for example, in the gas boiler or gas heating system. Because not all gas detectors report every gas! A TÜV or GS (tested safety) seal should always be present on the gas detector to ensure smooth and safe operation, as not only health but life is at stake. A further factor is electricity consumption: since the gas detector runs all the time, you should also have an overview of electricity consumption and the resulting costs. Special functions, such as a regular self-test function, should be considered. In this case, the gas detector tests itself at regular intervals. Another very important factor is the volume. The siren should have a volume of 75-85 decibels so that it can be heard throughout the house if necessary, for example if the detector is installed in the cellar. The manufacturer’s warranty should also be observed, as the sensors of the gas detector can wear out over time and the device could therefore lose its service life. The gas detector must be installed differently depending on the type of gas. For gas stoves fed with methane, for example, the gas detector should be installed on the ceiling, as the gas is lighter than air and therefore rises upwards. In any case, a distance of one meter from the respective gas source should be maintained. Unfavourable places to install a gas detector include: near doors or windows, in draught rooms, next to a cooker hood or in storage rooms where detergents, thinners or paints are stored

Once you have found out exactly which gas is used in the house or apartment, you can choose a device. Here it is worth looking at test portals to narrow the search, as there is a plethora of gas detectors on the market. For example, the “Elro RM337 2-in-1 Combi Detector, Carbon Monoxide and Gas Detector (Butane, Propane, Methane)” gas detector is recommended: it can detect the “most common” gases and has a volume of around 85 decibels. The operation is very user-friendly and has easy-to-understand lights/signs. Small weak point: there is no display showing possible gas values. Another model that performed well is the “KIDDE CO-Alarm X10-D with display carbon monoxide detector, white, 13775″”. Not only does it have a longer service life than the previously described model, namely around 10 years instead of five, but it also has low power consumption, an assembly set and easy operation. In addition, no power supply is required. However, “only” carbon monoxide gases are detected here. The “Abus carbon monoxide warning device COWM300, 37241” also performs very well. It also “only” recognizes the CO content, but has a volume of 85 decibels and a display to indicate the concentration. The installation is also very simple and the gas detector comes with detailed instructions.
