Graphics cards are connected to the mainboard as PC expansion cards via the corresponding slots, or they are already integrated there as a chipset. The processes running in the PC are represented on the monitor by the graphics card. While the main processor calculates e.g. the movements of figures, the graphics card is responsible for the lighting, physical effects, explosions, collapsing buildings etc.. Series production of graphics cards began in 1977 for the Apple II microcomputer, whose integrated graphics capabilities on the mainboard could be improved by these plug-in cards. The first IBM PC from 1982 only had a graphics card that could only display monochrome fonts. With the Hercules Graphics Card, Hercules introduced a much better graphics card to the market at the same time. The VGA mode (640×480 dots/16 colors) has remained an emergency mode for all PCs to this day, as all today’s PC graphics cards react only up to this mode. Of course, this VGA resolution is not the latest state of the art for graphics cards. Today’s graphics cards can handle video modes up to a resolution of 1280×1204 pixels with a color depth of 16 bits. This standard was developed by the VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) and when the 3D games came onto the market in the 1990s, the graphics cards developed into independent small computing units. Since PC games have become more and more sophisticated, it is understandable that one generation of graphics cards follows the other at ever shorter intervals. In connection with 3D games, the terms DirectX and OpenGL should also be mentioned here, which refer to the software for 3D resolution. DirectX is automatically installed when a Windows operating system is installed. OpenGL can be installed platform-independently on the PC.
