Drugstore articles: Hairdryer Video Guide

Drying your hair with a hairdryer after a morning shower – for most people this is a matter of course. But have you ever wondered what the difference is between a hair dryer and a hairdryer? And how is the hair dryer orthographically written – hair dryer, hair dryer or foen? All three spellings can be found. A detour into the history of technology and a look at the Duden will help to clarify these questions. Already at the end of the 19th century hair dryers were used in a Parisian hairdressing salon. A few years later, the German electrical appliance manufacturer AEG launched the first electric hair dryer on the market. The Sanitas company also developed hair dryers and in 1908 had the name ‘Foen’ protected. In 1957 Sanitas and thus also the word and figurative mark Foen were taken over by AEG. This is the reason why the manufacturers of these useful appliances, which can be found in every household, sell them as hair dryers, although colloquially there is almost always talk of hairdryers. The obvious idea is to name a device that generates a warm stream of air in analogy to the warm fall wind. Until the spelling reform in 1996, however, there was one difference: the wind that occurs in mountains at certain times was written Föhn. The electric hairdryer, on the other hand, was called Fön, or Foen, if the trade mark rights allowed that designation. Since the spelling reform the spelling of Föhn (warm fall wind) and Föhn (hair dryer) is identical. The owner of the word / figurative mark Foen is now Nürnberger Electrolux Rothenburg GmbH

When drying your hair, you probably don’t care how your useful helper is written – it is important that the hair dryer, hairdryer or foehn does its job quickly and well. However, thorough testing unfortunately shows that this is not a matter of course. Some devices are simply unwieldy and much too heavy. Since the hairdryer is usually used above the head, a heavy device can put considerable strain on the arms. Also make sure that the cable is long enough. It should have a length of at least two to three meters. Otherwise, it could happen that you can only overcome the distance between the socket and the mirror with the help of an extension cable. The electrical power is also important. Modern hair dryers consume about 2,000 watts. This is sufficient to dry the hair in an acceptable time. The performance should not be much higher for two reasons: If the temperatures are too high when blow-drying, the hair suffers. They dry out and lose their healthy appearance. A second reason is the overload of the sockets. These are fused with 10 A in many baths. With an output of 2,200 watts, this current value is almost reached.

Some hair dryers offer not only a warm airflow, but also additional functions. Whether you need styling jets, a diffuser or a cool down button depends primarily on your hair fullness and the desired hairstyle. More and more customers are opting for a hairdryer with ion technology. These hair dryers generate negatively charged ions. This has the advantage that the static charge of the hair is prevented. Especially in the cold season, many suffer from ‘flying hair’, which can ruin any chic styling of the hairstyle. In the test, the ion technology worked very well for some models. It turned out that a good hairdryer doesn’t have to be expensive. Even with hair dryers in the lower price category, such as the HD 6080 ion hair dryer from Grundig, you can start the day well styled.
