Hearing protection is designed to protect the ear from loud noises and to prevent damage to the eardrum and the internal auditory organs. In various areas of professional life it is mandatory to wear suitable hearing protection. But also in everyday life, hearing protection can be more than useful in many cases and protect the wearer from long-term damage. There are basically three different types of hearing protection. Perhaps the best known method of protecting the ears is to use earplugs made of soft, foamy materials worn in the ear. The second big group forms the capsule-ear-protection. The capsules of this hearing protection enclose the entire ear, similar to headphones. The earmoulds, which are individually adapted to the wearer, are counted as earplugs and are worn in the ear in the same way as they are.

The earplugs are divided into earplugs to be formed before use, bow plugs and individual earmoulds. Earplugs that are shaped before use are also known to many as “Ohropax”. These ear protectors usually consist of wool, silicone or foam soaked in wax. This type of hearing protector is worn in the ear canal and is usually intended for single use. The original OHROPAX soft foam stoppers are still very popular. We also recommend the Bilsom 303 ear plugs, which are available in different sizes and are often used in commercial and industrial areas with low requirements for hearing protection. They are easy to put on and take off. The plugs are connected to each other by a bow, or also by a cord. The plugs can be cleaned if necessary and are reusable. 3M offers a good earplug with the earplug 1310. Otoplastics are manufactured by the hearing aid acoustician individually and adapted to the auditory canal of the wearer. The external auditory canal and a part of the auricle are first moulded and then the earmould is made after the moulding. For an earmould, acrylic or silicone are used among other things. Due to their material properties, silicone earmoulds in particular are pleasant to wear and durable. The disadvantage of an earmould is the comparatively high price for individual fabrication.
In its simplest form, a capsule ear protector consists of two padded plastic shells lined with foam, which are connected to each other via a bracket, just like headphones. The plastic shells enclose the entire ear and the damping properties of the shell and the foam filling keep all too loud noises away from the wearer’s ear. Ear muffs are popular because they are usually comfortable to wear and can be quickly put on and taken off. A further development of these protectors are capsule ear protectors with level-dependent damping. These protectors are equipped with a microphone on the outside and a small loudspeaker inside. Between microphone and loudspeaker there is an amplifier with a very fast control electronics, which only forwards noises up to a certain volume level to the loudspeaker. This makes conversations possible without any problems even when hearing protection is worn. Loud noises, such as a bang, on the other hand, are only transmitted in a muted form. The H510AC Peltor 3M capsule ear protector, for example, or the Peltor Kid capsule ear protector KIDV, also from 3M, especially for children, offer good hearing protection.
Good hearing protection doesn’t cost the world. However, it is an indispensable protection at work and in the private environment of many activities and protects its wearer from irreversible damage to the hearing.
