The construction of heat cushions resembles a sandwich: several heating spirals encased in a flexible insulating layer are incorporated between double layers of foam material. The entire system (carrier and insulating layer as well as the heating spirals) is sewn into a protective cover made of robust materials (linen, cotton, etc.). This wrapping must not be opened. Today, modern heating pads offer excellent heat variability. With up to six temperature levels, many heating pads can be controlled – and infinitely variable as well. Depending on function and type, non-electronic heat pads are also available. These are provided with a chemical gel or a natural filling consisting of cherry stones, spelt or other materials. The power supply to the heat pad is via the mains operation (220 volts). The desired heat amplification of the cushion is achieved by connecting further heating coils via the controller. Since a heating pad is used close to the body, certain safety standards have been established for the production of the models. This would immediately cut off the power supply if the unit runs the risk of overheating. Another important, but not quite as pleasant topic is the waterproofness of the heating pad. Especially models of the older generation are often not resistant to sweat or other body fluids. Today, however, a waterproof heat cushion is standard. However, you should still keep an eye on it when buying.
