Best Henhouse

If you read the newspaper or watch the news, you will always see reports and scandals about livestock husbandry. One terrible message after another. Often enough, chicken eggs are also affected. Apart from the often catastrophic husbandry conditions, the eggs are then contaminated with dioxin or antibiotics, for example. Many consumers lose their appetite.

Everything for animals: Henhouse Video Guide

More and more magazines about country life or ecological lifestyle are available in the magazine trade. The Internet also offers a number of sources of information, ranging from your own kitchen garden to complete self-sufficiency. This trend has brought chicken farming back into the foreground in our own gardens. Here you can find out why this is so and why keeping chickens is not so difficult.

A few things should be clarified in advance. Chickens can’t be kept on the balcony. A certain minimum area should be available for the stable and the run. Furthermore, in residential areas, the authorities must be asked in what form chickens may be kept. Building permits may be required for stables in particular. A good solution here are mobile henhouses on at least one wheel, which are adjustable. As a rule, such stables do not require a building permit. Not to be despised is also the conversation with the neighbours and whether a cock may be held or not. With a few eggs from happy chickens many a neighbour has been convinced. Once these basic structural requirements have been clarified, the desired chicken breed can already be included in the planning. It is important to always adapt the chicken terrace to the available space.

Chickens definitely need a stable. For staying overnight and usually to lay your eggs. The stable also offers shelter from predators such as foxes and martens. The outside area can then be directly attached to the barn. Some chicken farmers have attached another cold scratching room to the stable and only afterwards the actual run-out. Whether this outlet is fenced and possibly still secured by a net at the top must be decided by each owner. If the chickens always run free, losses must be reckoned with by robbers. The stable, on the other hand, should always be locked at night. An automatic doorman can do a good job here. In the literature, 10 square meters per hen are planned as an exercise area for large chickens – dwarf breeds manage with a little less.

It’s impossible without it – the chicken coop. Here there are many possibilities to offer the pretty chickens a safe and comfortable roof over their heads. If you have a little technical skill, you can resort to very individual solutions. There is now enough good literature on how to build a chicken house completely by yourself. Advantage: this stable then fulfils all space requirements and the wishes of the owner. Another option is to buy a finished garden house from a DIY store, which can be made of either wood or metal. Wooden houses are clearly preferable here because they are easier to rebuild and adapt. In summer, metal houses are often too hot for the chickens and form condensation water. Both variants have the advantage that they are easy to walk on and allow upright working. Other individual solutions are converted construction wagons or horse trailers. Since these are on wheels, they are mobile stables. Disadvantage: They are only suitable for large areas and not for the normal garden.

In the meantime there is an almost unmanageable selection of prefabricated stables on the market. These are available in different quality levels and sizes. Of course, this also has an effect on the price. Since chickens are social beings, a group of at least 3 animals should always be kept together. Experience shows that in the course of time there will be more animals, so that a slightly larger stable should be considered from the beginning. Prefabricated stables can now be ordered from online shops or pet stores. Before using used stables, you should take a good look at the condition, as there is a great danger of introducing diseases or bird mites. On the market there are not only wooden stables but also variants made of plastic. These are very easy to maintain, but very expensive in comparison.

A prefabricated stable should meet the basic needs of a chicken. This is the only way to ensure a species-appropriate husbandry. Make sure that there is sufficient light through the windows and the size of the prefabricated stables, because it is possible that official regulations may impose a duty to keep stables for a certain period of time. Prefabricated stables with sufficient fenced-in runouts can do without large windows. There are also optical differences. From the simple wooden box to the country house look, everything is available today. Tip: even simple wooden stables can be painted and at the same time protected from the weather. Most henhouses on the market are impregnated, but it is advisable to repaint the henhouse itself with a non-toxic wood varnish.
