The ancient Greeks (around the 6th century BC) were considered the inventors of the crane for lifting heavy loads. These lifting machines needed winches and multiple pulleys to move weights weighing tons. The Romans developed the concept further. Pulley block with three pulleys, reel, lifting beam and rope were the parts of the first Roman cranes. If a treadwheel replaced the reel, even larger loads could be lifted. Wooden lifting towers and several anchor winches meant a further step. In the Middle Ages, the treadmill, which had at times fallen into oblivion, came back into fashion in an improved form. In the meantime, modern cranes have become machines used all over the world in the entire construction process and as transport equipment for heavy loads indoors and outdoors. They can be seen on construction sites as well as at freight stations or in container ports. Lifting cranes can move loads from a few hundred kilograms to over a hundred tons. The lifting and lowering of heavy parts is also possible in several directions, i.e. in the three-dimensional range. From truck-mounted cranes to crawler cranes and tower cranes, there is a wide variety of designs available. In addition, there is the division into electric crane or hydraulic crane. A crane is, generally speaking, a device for changing position or loading particularly heavy loads. Depending on the application and location, different types of cranes are used. If, for example, you run a garage or a construction business, it is worth considering buying a suitable crane. Hydraulically extendable telescopic booms or lattice boom booms (higher payloads) are represented. The most important thing of the cranes is their mobility: there are fast moving, slow moving, off-road mobile cranes and crawler cranes. All these mobile cranes are also subject to the regulations of the road traffic regulations.

Slewing cranes such as ceiling, pillar or wall cranes as well as a so-called derrick crane are very versatile. The derrick crane with its small space requirement and a horizontal slewing range of up to 220 degrees, for example, is well suited for dismantling other cranes. Pillar-mounted cranes have proven their worth, among other things, in transmission production. Fixed with special compact anchors, several such pillar cranes can speed up the workflow enormously in one operation. A portal crane spans the respective working area like a portal. The stationary crane usually runs on two parallel rails. Various trolleys with hoisting gear travel along the crane bridge. This type of crane can lift the heaviest loads between its supports. The tower crane is also called a tower slewing crane because a built-in slewing ring permits special variants in the movement sequence. There are top rotating tower cranes and bottom rotating tower cranes because the slewing gear is either at the top or bottom of the crane tower. Bottom turners are particularly easy to assemble and disassemble.
