The word hula-hoop comes partly from the Hawaiian language and means: hula for a traditional dance and hoop is the English word for the hoop of a barrel. In the USA, the first Hula-Hoop tires made of colorful plastic were manufactured by the company Wham-O-Corp. in California. Within just four months, approximately 25 million of these tyres were sold in America in 1958. In Germany, the first manufacturer of plastic Hula-Hoop tyres was geobra Brandstätter. This company later also became known for the development of the Playmobil toy, which was very popular with children. Even a German comedy with the actors Cornelia Froboess and Rex Gildo was written under this name in 1959: Hula Hoop. In the 80s of the last century the Hula Hoop tyre experienced another comeback and was again a popular toy for children and teenagers. Hardly any generation of children has made any acquaintance with the varied games and skill exercises of the colourful tyres.

At present, the game and exercise with the colorful tires repeatedly enjoy great popularity. Modern tires with massage nubs, hula-hoop clothing or other hula-hoop accessories are available in stores. Hula-hoop clothing made of scratch-free and soft natural fibres such as cotton, linen, hemp or similar should make it possible to circle and hold the tyre as long as possible on the body. On synthetic fibers, the tires would slide down too easily. Some hula hoop athletes prefer belly-free clothing, while others prefer T-shirts or the like. The Hula-Hoop tyres are available in different sizes. The bigger and heavier a tyre is, the slower it runs around the body. Beginners often find it easier to learn and practice the right hip swing with the bigger tyres before reaching for the small fast tyres. Modern hula-hoop tyres are often made of the plastic polypropylene. This plastic has the advantages of being harder and more stable than other plastics, such as PE, at a low weight. Doctors and fitness trainers recommend the rediscovered sport with the inexpensive and easy to transport sports equipment for physical fitness and weight loss in overweight. The easy to learn exercises with the Hula Hoop tire can easily burn many calories in almost any place, outside or inside, allowing excess pounds to tumble quickly. The positive effect of sport with tyres on the human figure has already been described in the medical writings of ancient Greece. A picture of the mythical Ganymede as the “most beautiful of all mortals” can be seen on a Greek vase from about 500 BC. In hula-hoop artistry, with the help of additional accessories or special features of the tires, fascinating games with glittering colors and fire can be seen as a pure feast for the eyes of an enthusiastic audience.
