Filtering the water in an aquarium is usually essential to establish or maintain a stable biological system. An aquarium filter cleans the water mechanically and on a biological basis. It removes dirt from the water and provides a good base for accumulation by useful bacteria that help break down or convert the dirt. Basically, two filter types are offered for this purpose: External and internal filters. The decisive criterion for selecting the type is the size of the aquarium. From approx. 100 litres, external filters are usually fitted. For smaller aquariums, internal filters are usually used – and this is exactly what we are talking about here. They are typical entry-level equipment, namely simple and inexpensive. However, soil filters are normally not counted as internal filters, although they are also installed inside the aquarium. There is no justification for it, it just has become so established.

Everything for animals: Internal filter Video Guide
In the filter, a centrifugal pump directs the water through a sponge, which can be made of different materials. It mechanically filters out the dirt particles and the bacteria in it carry out additional biological purification by biochemical conversion. Internal filters have a relatively small construction size, suck the water mostly from below and are often attached with suction cups to the aquarium internal glass or with suspension devices to the aquarium rear wall. The individual elements are:- Filter container with open-pored sponge – Filter head, in which mostly the centrifugal pump and its drive motor is integrated – The motor is mostly electrically operated, but there are also air-driven variants – Cable with plug for supplying the motor with operating voltage – Impeller, which drives the water out of the filter at the top – Some filters are equipped with a special nozzle (diffusor), which sucks in additional air and introduces it into the aquarium, which is advantageous when there is a high number of fish
Advantages:- small size – easy installation, maintenance and cleaning – highly recommended for beginners, often already included in aquarium sets – possibly equipped with diffuser for advantageous water/air circulation with high load – price is usually significantly lower than with external filter – no risk of leakage through the filter
Disadvantages:- Filter performance is lower than with external filters, therefore not suitable for larger aquariums – The positioning of an internal filter often seems aesthetically unsuccessful, i.e. the optics are disturbed and should be hidden, e.g. by installation behind plant filter system is not expandable
– When cleaning the filter, do not wash the sponge out hot or cold. It harms the bacteria. It is best to express the filter in the aquarium water, e.g. in drained water after a partial water change – in the concrete design of the filter, the existing or planned biosphere should be taken into account, i.e. in the case of small fish or shrimps, a normal filter that sucks the water through slots can cause great damage. This can be remedied by coating the suction nozzle with, for example, fine-meshed but water-permeable fabric. Some aquarists have an aversion to electrics in the water, which means that larger particles of pollution can get caught, but the animals are spared. However, the motors in internal filters are usually waterproof and safety concerns are usually unfounded unless there is a defect. If, however, work is carried out in the aquarium in which the hands are immersed in the water or come into contact with it, all plugs must be pulled out beforehand to safely disconnect the power supply, as water and electrical voltage are a dangerous combination – The filter should be inspected regularly and the sponge cleaned. However, the respective conditions must be taken into account, i.e. too intensive and frequent cleaning can do more harm than good, as the bacterial fauna in the internal filter can be disproportionately attacked.
