Camping & Outdoor: Isomatte Video Guide

Camping is one of the most exciting ways to spend time outdoors, in the best case even in the great outdoors. Here humans are relatively unprotected from environmental influences and have to adapt to them. Nevertheless, modern technology offers possibilities to make your stay in the open air more pleasant. While most of the time it is enough to wear warm, weatherproof clothing and at least a protective tent during the day, further precautions have to be taken at night so that camping is fun and does not become a torture. Almost everywhere in the world, but definitely in Central Europe, temperatures usually drop significantly at night, while humidity rises. As a result, a much better protection against the weather is indispensable, as these conditions lead to a stronger cooling of the body. In order to prevent this, the best protection against these climatic conditions is to use an insulating mat as a base for sleeping.

In the great outdoors it depends on the best possible equipment that you can get to spend your time in the open as pleasantly as possible. Many people who want to camp therefore think in particular of first-class clothing, a large, easy-to-assemble and high-quality tent, a good sleeping bag for the night and some technical amenities of civilization. Most people are not aware that this is not sufficient equipment. Especially at night, the greatest weakness of the entire equipment becomes apparent. While the tent maintains a relatively comfortable air temperature and protects clothing and sleeping bag from the cold air, inexperienced campers in particular must quickly realize that they lack an insulating mat. This has two functions which the rest of the equipment cannot fulfil. Both the clothes and the sleeping bag are filled with down or similar, very voluminous and soft materials, which form a thick, insulating layer of air between the body and the environment. The disadvantage of these materials, however, is that they can be easily compressed, allowing the protective air cushion to escape from their gaps. This happens especially at night when you want to lie down to sleep. As a result, two problems arise. On the one hand there is no insulation against the cold ground and the body loses a lot of heat in this direction, because no warmer air from the tent can get under the body. On the other hand, the thickness of the material is very small at the bottom and you can feel the slightest unevenness of the hard floor. An insulating mat is made of solid material, which prevents these two problems by creating a barrier against the unevenness and low temperatures of the floor.

In order for the sleeping mat to actually fulfil the desired purpose, it is essential to pay attention to the highest quality when searching for the right model. There are inflatable models, insulation mats filled with synthetic fibres or down, particularly light foam mats and, as an alternative, air mattresses can also be used. Only a combination of inflatable insulating mats with individual foam elements should be avoided at all costs, as these only fulfil their tasks very inadequately. Important criteria for the selection are the strength of the sleeping mat, the lying surface and, in some cases, its weight. Which model is the right one for you depends in particular on your own sleeping habits, the demands and the respective situation. It is therefore difficult to give a general recommendation that fully satisfies every requirement. In an external test, the Therm-a-Rest – NeoAir Xtherm insulation mat was declared the winner. It has a lying surface of 191×61 cm in size L and has a weight of 570 g.
