Modern television sets have been an integral part of the living room for a long time. In more and more households, however, televisions are also being used in other rooms, for example in the bedroom or also in the hobby room or cellar. The selection of different techniques, sizes and models is accordingly larger than ever before. Every manufacturer promises modern technology at a fair price, of course current standards should not be missing. LCD televisions represent a general group in the very large selection. But what technical features and possibilities should a modern LCD television be able to offer today, and what should be taken into account when purchasing? And how does LCD technology work, what are its strengths and, of course, its weaknesses? A comprehensive answer to all these questions will be found in the following guide. What is LCD anyway? The abbreviation LCD comes from English and is formed from the initial letters of the words Liquid Crystal Display. Translated into German, this means “liquid crystal display”. The crystals are used for colour representation and a light source in the background can make the screen glow. Even though the LCD display may be familiar to many people, especially from televisions, they are also frequently used in beamers, PC monitors, smartphones and tablets. What should a good LCD television offer today? Whether Blu-Ray or modern television stations via satellite or Internet, the resolutions of the content have increased in recent years. This has the advantage that significantly more pixels and thus finer content can be displayed, the quality continues to increase. In order to keep up with this, the new LCD TV should of course also be able to offer a high resolution. Full HD is actually the current standard for televisions, so a total of 1920 x 1080 pixels can be displayed. Especially the very cheap and smaller LCD televisions are still based on a HD Ready Panel, which can only display 1366 x 768 pixels. You should therefore make sure that at least the Full HD standard is already on board when you buy, and you should also pay attention to the reaction time so that you don’t have to experience an unpleasant surprise at the end of the day. The reaction time of the panel plays a decisive role, especially for fast films with many image changes or for sports such as football and the like. If this is too slow, unclean images are created and the overall image quality leaves much to be desired. When buying, you should make sure that this is 5 milliseconds or less if possible. This ensures a clean picture. The general equipment is another aspect where many manufacturers want to save money. However, as more and more terminals are to be connected to the LCD television today, it is important that numerous interfaces are available. Of course, the popular HDMI connection is particularly important here, from which several should be directly available if possible. Tablet, notebook and console can be connected without any problems. Good LCD televisions have at least 3 connections, more are of course even better. If you want to connect external speakers or a sound system to the LCD TV for a better audio experience, you should also pay attention to a 3.5 mm jack connection when purchasing. Although this can usually be found on almost every LCD television, it is also occasionally dispensed with, especially on inexpensive models. Integrated WLAN as well as a network connection should no longer be missing today, as this is the only way for the new LCD TV to access the Internet and online content.
