Everything for animals: Longe Line for Horses Video Guide

The horse with the student in the saddle is run on a circular track and is led by the riding instructor on a leash, the longe. This allows the student to concentrate on the correct sitting position during the first few hours, while the horse is guided by the riding instructor on the lunge. After longer periods of standing, a lunge is used to gently train the horse without regaining the rider’s weight and to relax the muscles. Leading a horse at the lunge is also part of the equestrian sport of vaulting. A special form of the lunge is the so-called double lunge. The double lunge has been used for several years in the training of horses. The great advantage of training on the double lunge is that the trainer can observe the horse from the ground and directly influence the horse’s behaviour via the lunge. The double lunge can be used independently of the previous training of the horse.

A double lunge is available as an open lunge, i.e. a lunge split approximately halfway along its length, and as a closed lunge. The double lunge usually has a total length of 16 to 20 metres. Occasionally, shorter double lunge lengths are offered to make it easier for beginners to work with the double lunge. At both ends of the lunge there are carabiner hooks, with which the lunge is hooked into the horse’s bridle. Depending on the model and manufacturer, some double longes also have two pulleys at each end of the rope. The double lunge from Waldhausen is an open double lunge made of robust webbing. The double lunge is available with a length of 16 or 18 metres. Two sturdy snap hooks are sewn into the rope ends.

Different materials are available for the double longes. There are models available made of only one material, mostly nylon or another braided plastic, and models made of two different materials. With the double lunge made of two materials, the part held in the hand usually consists of a wide belt material and the last 2 to 3 meters before the rope ends of tear-resistant nylon. A further variant are double longes made of a soft and much thicker cotton rope. Cotton ropes have the advantage that they are lighter than plastic ropes. The lower weight and the soft material make lungeing easier for the lunger. However, the cotton ropes also have a not inconsiderable disadvantage. In damp weather, the cotton material becomes increasingly wet and heavier.

The 16 metre long double lunge of Pferdeseile_DE is made of a combination of cotton and polypropylene. The cotton section of this double lunge is pleasantly wide. The colour contrast between the black cotton rope and the white polypropylene rope shows the position of the rope layer at a glance

The double lunge bus with a length of 18 metres has two pulleys at each end of the rope with snap hooks for attaching to the horse’s bridle. Also with this double lunge, the hand-guided part of the rope is wider than the ends and therefore lies comfortably in the hand.

Two points are particularly important when selecting a double lunge. That’s the quality of the workmanship. In particular, the seams at the joints of the two rope materials and the seams for the loops of the karabiners should be as clean as possible. The second point is the shape of the rope ends. Round rope ends slip better through the rings on the bridle and run much better in the pulleys. Only with ropes that run as smoothly as possible can the double lunge and thus the horse be guided sensitively.
