When it comes to orange oil, most people think of scented lamps or scented candles. Orange oil can do much more than fill the living rooms with a pleasant scent. Find out here what orange oil is all about and what you should pay attention to when using it. What is orange oil? There are two different types of orange oil: sweet and bitter. Sweet orange oil is obtained from the peel of the Citrus sinensis fruit, whereby 200 to 300 kilograms of fruit are required for one kilogram of oil. The most important production countries are California, Florida and Brazil. The oil is used for sweetening food and beverages, as a fragrance dispenser for fragrance lamps and for diluting paints. Bitter orange oil comes from the peel of Citrus aurantium. Since it is not produced in such large quantities as the sweet variant, it is a little more expensive. Bitter orange oil is suitable, for example, for removing lubricating oil and tar and for degreasing metal. It is also used in cosmetics and as a flavouring in foodstuffs. The scent is very pleasant and reminds a little of the smell of mandarins. Ingredients of orange oil Here is an overview of the ingredients of orange oil

If the orange oil is specially intended for cleaning surfaces, it may also contain surface-active substances. Even if the oil is to be used for skin care, it is often enriched with caring additives. In principle, however, the less additives orange oil contains, the purer it is. Special high-quality oils are marked “genuin”. In addition, it is advisable to use orange oil, the packaging of which indicates not only the batch number but also the plant species used. Orange oil is often offered in a diluted form. In this case, the carrier oil used for dilution must also be of the highest possible quality. As a rule of thumb, oil from organically grown oranges is generally of good quality. Application areas for orange oil The list of possible application areas for orange oil is extensive. As a room fragrance it relaxes the senses as well as the muscles. In the course of aromatherapy, it can calm the nerves, reduce anxiety and thus prevent winter depression. Orange oil can also be used in cases of inner restlessness and/or sleep disorders. As it has a relaxing and cell tightening effect on the organs, it is also suitable for the treatment of stomach complaints and for the alleviation of cellulite. In addition, orange oil is a natural remedy for loss of appetite. It stimulates the digestive organs and lymph flow, strengthens the immune system and stimulates circulation. Orange oil also benefits the skin in many ways: it is antibacterial, disinfectant and can therefore be used for acne and small wounds. When using orange oil, it should be noted that the main component of the oil (limonene) is highly flammable. The oil should therefore always be stored in a carefully sealed container. Pure orange oil is also irritant, which is why it must not come into direct contact with the skin. Important: If you want to use orange oil for skin care, you should only use products that are specially designed for this purpose. Even if the oil is only to be used as a cleaning agent, care must be taken: Wood furniture in particular reacts sensitively to oil and is easily damaged.
