Most pocket bikes have a two-stroke engine with a displacement of 39 to 50 cubic centimetres. The technology of these motors is compact and simple. Both water-cooled and air-cooled motors are used, which are independent of a design with cable pull. They are rarely started by an electric starter. The engines are fed via a fuel carburettor such as a round slide and a flat slide carburettor. Sometimes vacuum diaphragm carburettors are used, but it is also possible to use oil-cooled four-stroke engines, as offered by various manufacturers. These have a displacement of 80 to 110 cubic centimetres.
Pocketbikes are usually not equipped with complicated manual transmissions like their big counterparts. A centrifugal clutch transfers the drive energy to a pinion. This transmits the energy via the drive chain to the chainring. The term automatic is often used for this drive technology. The sprocket has a ratio of six to eleven teeth, the chainring has 60 to 80 teeth. The Dirtbike has a different type of drive. The engine energy is transferred here to a centrifugal clutch, which is then transmitted via a reduction gear and then transferred to a sprocket like on a pocket bike. The sprocket then transmits the energy via the drive chain to the rear sprocket.
Pocketbikes have front wheel disc brakes that are either rigid or floating and have a diameter of 160 millimeters. This is a single or double disc, the single-piston brake shell of which is usually mounted in a floating position and actuated by a cable pull. A rigidly mounted rear disc brake with a diameter of up to 110 millimetres is also possible. Here a single disc is used, which usually has a floating single-piston brake caliper and is also actuated by a cable pull. Today, however, there are already hydraulic brake systems that are equipped with multi-piston brake calipers.
Pocketbikes are used exclusively as motor sports equipment. They should therefore only be ridden with appropriate protective clothing such as a helmet, leather suit and gloves. In Germany and other countries there are several Pocketbike Championships. A European Championship will also be held. At the German championship the drivers will be divided into four classes. In classes 1 and 2, students up to the age of 16 can participate and use machines with an output of up to 7 hp. Class 3, the Senior Mini, is valid from the age of 16. Young drivers are allowed to drive two-strokes up to 50 cubic centimetres displacement or four-strokes up to 90 cubic centimetres displacement without power limitation. The class 4, the Senior Midi, is equivalent to class 3, but the slightly larger Midibikes are ridden here. For classes 1 to 4, only bikes from well-known manufacturers are permitted
In Germany, driving pocket bikes on public roads is prohibited. Pocketbikes may be ridden either on a closed private area or on a specially designed and permitted racetrack. However, these areas may not have direct access to public road transport. Driving on dirt roads or parking lots is also prohibited. The approval of the pocket motorbike is almost impossible in Germany, because the bikes actually never meet the requirements of the road traffic approval regulation. This also means that no suitable insurance cover can be granted. For driving on public roads a driving licence of at least class A or A1 is required. If you drive a vehicle like the Pocketbike without TÜV approval, driving licence and insurance, you are liable to prosecution in Germany. In short, driving pocket bikes is prohibited wherever the Road Traffic Licensing Regulation applies. Pocket bikes do not belong in the hands of children or inexperienced riders. Even if they are only small vehicles, there is a risk of accidents, which are usually accompanied by injuries. Pocketbikes may only be used by competent persons on expressly permitted areas.
