The polishing sponge is an accessory of the polishing machine and is used for polishing various surfaces. The use of the polishing sponge ranges from the polishing of weathered or matt lacquers to the fine finishing of grinding areas, the processing of small scratches and the removal of holograms. Holograms are micro-scratches that run in different directions and are best seen in the sun. This can be caused by incorrect polishing agents (e.g. coarse polishes, incorrect polishing hoods), mechanical cleaners or polishing the painted surface without prior cleaning. A distinction is made between the following surfaces with polishing sponges:1. Smooth surface2. Waffled / nubbed structure with anti-hologram effect3. Wave / wave structure to improve the polishing effect4. Honeycomb structure for a better polishing effectWhile the smooth surface is the original form, the structured and waved ones are newer forms of the surface. Although they are usually more expensive, they also have some advantages, including the removal and prevention of holograms. Basically, the type of use of the polishing sponge depends on its density and hardness. A distinction is made here between three types:1. 1. Velcro: This is the most commonly used way to attach the polishing sponge to the polishing disc, which is then attached to the polishing machine with an M14 thread. The polishing plate, on the other hand, can be smaller under certain circumstances. The polishing sponge is placed in the centre – Smaller Velcro: The manufacturer places the size of the polishing plate in the foreground, whereby this can lead to scratches when the polishing sponge / polishing machine is tilted – Velcro embedded in the polishing sponge: Here the polishing plate fits exactly on the Velcro. This ensures that the optimum size of the polishing disc is used. This leads to better protection against scratches, as the polishing disc no longer comes into contact with the paint. In addition, the recessed Velcro is edged with rubber, which offers additional protection – Velcro with a centered hole: Here the polishing sponge has a hole in the center, which fits the diameter of the centering rod. This in turn is used to insert it into a hole in the middle of the polishing disc. Once the polishing sponge has been attached to the polishing plate, the centering rod can be removed again. This variation ensures that the polishing pad is perfectly centred.2 Smartdrive Adapter: This adapter is screwed to the polishing machine with an M14 thread. The Smartdrive adapter centers and fastens the polishing pad with a small turn in a fast and low-vibration manner.3. M14 thread: In this variation, the polishing pad is glued directly to the polishing disc. This ensures a centred attachment and additionally saves the extra Velcro plate.
