There are rabbit stables with outdoor enclosures in many different designs. From an optical point of view they also represent small splendid villas. The appearance is not decisive, however, but the habitat of rabbits should be designed in such a way that it offers the longest possible race track for hobbling and a protected retreat. The stables with integrated open-air enclosures usually consist of wooden constructions for closed rooms and wire mesh for outdoor areas. They are usually two-storey and offer space for sleeping and resting in the upper area. If the animals stay outside in winter, an isolated indoor area is indispensable. Dry hay is the ideal base for lying down. Of course it is advantageous if both areas are connected by a wooden board. So the animals themselves can get from bottom to top and decide freely where they want to be. Rabbits are very curious and quickly find out how to get from one place to another. If these two areas are separated, the animals must be moved by hand in the evening. This is rather a disadvantage, because it can easily fall into oblivion and the rabbits cannot withdraw themselves. For them it is important that they have a long and wide freewheel, in which they can hobble efficiently and also hit one or the other hook. It is therefore advisable to lay plates or wire under the enclosure and on the sides so that the rabbits cannot free themselves and their enemies cannot reach them. A soft layer of sand, grass or bark mulch is then placed on the base plates or wire. A mixture of these is also possible. For hygienic reasons, however, these materials should be replaced regularly with fresh layers
Rabbits like to nibble, but also their natural enemies are very imaginative. Therefore, spot-welded aviary wire should be considered when purchasing. If you have a garden and want to keep your rabbits outside, you should choose a place that is sheltered from the wind and preferably surrounded by trees. Trees provide shade and prevent the animals from being directly exposed to the sun’s rays. Of course, an outdoor enclosure must be very stable and have a good locking system so that neither dogs, foxes nor birds of prey can catch it as prey. It is also advantageous if the enclosure and the stable are always set up in good visibility to the house.
