Liquid soaps and washing lotions were the first products to be offered on a large scale with refill bags. And even today they still hold the lion’s share on the shelves of drugstores. The viscous liquids are easy to decant and, on average, double the amount in the refill bag costs only a cent more than half the contents in the dispenser. The Federal Ministry for the Environment has described the enormous, environmentally relevant difference between refillable and refillable packaging very vividly in recent reports: According to the study, packaging consumption between a 400-milliliter refill bag and a 500-milliliter liquid soap dispenser is 63 percent lower.

Henkel, the detergent and beauty care group, deserves special mention in this context. In 2010, the Düsseldorf-based company succeeded in developing the Eco Smart refill bags, which use two-thirds less plastic in their production than the refill packs previously produced. Henkel was also able to balance out savings in the necessary production energy and transport costs – and put the competition under severe pressure with lower sales prices for the products manufactured in this way. Direct competitors felt compelled to follow suit – and for many products to bring less environmentally damaging and cheaper refill bags onto the market. However, some upscale brands are still reluctant to offer refills.

In addition to detergents and cleaning agents, shower gel and soap, dehumidifiers and disinfectant wipes are offered in practical refill bags. In the food sector, on the other hand, the situation is comparatively poor. This is not least due to the mandatory expiry date printed on the original packaging, which would then become obsolete if refills were possible. Nevertheless, Kaba has long been offering its cocoa powders in refill bags. And: spices can almost be regarded as a prime example of an environmentally friendly product policy. From simple salt to marjoram, thyme and basil to exotic chili blends, almost everything is available in refill bags. From the point of view of benefits, this field is also affected by the fact that frequently used spices can be purchased in larger quantities, while rarely used spices can also be purchased in smaller cans – so that the company’s own range can always score with freshness and aroma.

The fitness industry is also exemplary. Nearly all manufacturers of protein shakes, protein powders and body preparations offer refill bags for their mostly large-volume original hard plastic packaging. These then usually do not require any plastic at all – the powders are delivered in waxed paper bags. These are opaque and hygienic, but can be recycled one hundred percent. And from time to time refill bags can even ensure a restful night’s sleep after fitness training: refill packs with fibre beads of various thicknesses make flat pillows and flabby duvets fluffy and bulky again. The better solution than simply disposing of them.

The consistent search for refills, however, also reveals things that make you smile a little. The invention of the “loose hair” originates originally from the make-up studios of Hollywood. These are small hair fibres which combine with the human hair through electrostatic charging when rubbing and thus hide bare or light spots. They are delivered in a practical shaker – for which there are refill bags in the same colour.
