Rouge already served the women in ancient Egypt about 4,500 years ago to embellish and accentuate the cheek parts. In later centuries, rouge was used to add a colourful accent to the immaculate white skin ideal that prevailed in the upper classes of society, making the face look fresher and healthier. Rouge is still applied today to give the skin a youthful appearance. Numerous suppliers are now competing for the customers’ favour and offer rouge for sale in many different shades and with different ingredients.

Beauty: Rouge Video Guide

Powder from finely ground talc is probably the most frequently used cosmetic base material. Rouge is also based on powder. Rouge consists of a good two thirds powder. Depending on the desired opacity, up to 10 percent color pigments can also be added. Other ingredients such as oils, starch, magnesium or zinc stearate give the rouge the desired properties. Powder is popular to mattify the complexion and can be adjusted to certain skin types with different ingredients. In recent years, natural or plant-based ingredients have also become increasingly popular for rouge.

Conventionally produced rouge often uses substances that are suspected of being hazardous to both health and the environment. These include petroleum and petroleum-based substances, parabens, formaldehyde, synthetic fragrances and dyes, and chemical UV filters. With some of these ingredients it cannot be excluded that they are hormonally effective or cause allergies. With various ingredients, it is even assumed that they can be carcinogenic. The widely used microplastic also pollutes the environment.

Until just over 100 years ago, rouge was produced using only natural ingredients. However, some of them were very toxic and harmful to humans. Galena is an inglorious example of this. With the rapid development of chemistry, cosmetic articles such as rouge were increasingly produced from synthetic raw materials. Quite simply because, for example, synthetically produced color pigments were much cheaper than natural color pigments. In recent years, this trend has reversed again and more and more manufacturers are turning to natural substances for the production of rouge and other cosmetic products. In many cases, vegetable oils are used instead of petroleum products. Natural ingredients are also on the advance in colour pigments and fragrances. An example of a natural rouge is Dr. Hauschka’s rouge. Perhaps the best-known manufacturer of natural cosmetics and for many years pioneer in this field Yves Roche from France.

The development of rouge based on natural ingredients is very beneficial for people with allergies. Many of the synthetically produced ingredients can cause allergies. Although not all natural substances are without risk for allergy sufferers, the potential to trigger an allergy is much lower. If you do not want to do without rouge and know which substances you are allergic to, you should also study the list of ingredients for natural products. More and more manufacturers certify that their products are manufactured without allergenic ingredients. A disadvantage of the natural and allergy-tested products is the often higher price compared to the conventionally manufactured rouge products. That this is not always the case, however, must prove the self-margins of the large drugstore chains. The drugstore chains have also recognized the signs of the times and offer their own cosmetic series with natural ingredients under different names at reasonable prices. An example of this is the rouge of the Alverde brand of the DM drugstore. In general, a good rouge does not have to be expensive. A comparison and simple testing can save a lot of money when buying a rouge.
