Car Parts & Accessories: Summer tyres Video Guide

Tyres are an important part of a vehicle’s equipment in terms of safety. The quality of the tyres is of central importance for driving and braking behaviour. While great importance is often attached to the safety-relevant extras in a vehicle and the performance of the engine is also important, the importance of the tires is very often underestimated and consequently neglected. On the one hand, a high-quality tire transfers the power of the engine better to the road and, on the other hand, the effect of driving assistance systems such as ABS is influenced by the tires. Due to the weather conditions in Germany, summer tyres play the biggest role here.

Every year, the question arises as to when the tyres need to be changed and what the current legal situation is. The fact is that until today there is no obligation to change tyres depending on the calendar season. The legislator merely stipulates that the tyres must be changed depending on the weather. Although there are studies that question the weather dependency more strongly and question the guideline value, a road temperature of 7°C is a rough guide. Above this temperature, summer tyres are clearly superior to both winter tyres and all-season tyres. The harder rubber compound offers better grip especially on dry roads. This makes both braking performance and acceleration much better. The cost factor also plays a role. Good tyres are undoubtedly expensive. Therefore it is particularly important to put on summer tyres early, because they are less worn out at warmer temperatures than winter tyres or all-season tyres and thus help to save money in the long run, because you have to buy new tyres. The driving behaviour also results in cost savings. The better grip of the summer tyres and the resulting better handling of the vehicle means that less fuel is consumed and even more money is saved.

When selecting a summer tyre, the first thing that matters is the pure technical data. These include the tyre size and the service description, from which the dimensions and maximum speed are derived. This data must be correct in order for a tyre to be suitable for the vehicle in question. The best statement about quality is made by the UTCQ or Uniform Tire Quality Grade. This classification is available for summer tyres from a rim diameter of 13 inches. The classification is based on wet grip in categories AA, A, B and C, temperature resistance of the tyre in categories A, B and C and abrasion resistance. Abrasion resistance is measured relatively by defining a standardised tyre as the reference value of 100 (percent). The abrasion resistance of the comparison tyre, for example, is given as 200 if it lasts twice as long. Abrasion resistance is rated at a maximum of 480. According to this, a tyre with AA / A / 480 is the highest quality model that would be available. In addition to the American UTCQ grade, there is a label in the EU according to EU Regulation 1222/2009, which makes three other statements about the quality of a tyre. The first indication concerns the energy efficiency of a tyre, which is equivalent to fuel consumption. The classification is into categories A to G. The second indication refers to the grip of the tyre in wet conditions and at a speed of 80 km/h. The second indication refers to the tyre’s grip in wet conditions. This information is given in categories A to F and makes relative statements about the braking distance. While Category A tyres have the shortest braking distance, Category B tyres already have 3 metres and Category F tyres 6 metres longer. The latter refers to noise emission and is marked with symbolic sound waves. Three sound waves correspond to the limit value valid until the end of 2015, two sound waves correspond to the current limit value or are 3 dB lower, and one sound wave is even quieter. In the end, the DOT number with the statement about the date of manufacture and the tread depth counts especially for used tyres.
