Women’s fashion: Undershirts Video Guide

The undershirt has been around for a long time. Its development history is closely linked to underwear in general. And these already existed in modern times. Only at that time did the term ‘undershirt’ refer to the lower half of a shirt. The then “Niedershmd”, however, corresponded to today’s idea of an undershirt. This was worn by both women and men under the garment. Until the French Revolution, the appearance of undershirts had little in common with that of today’s undershirts. For this was a long linen shirt which was worn in bed itself. With both sexes, the Niedershmd covered the torso, the arms as well as the legs up to the calves. The only difference between the undershirts for men and for women was the neckline, which was slightly wider for women. The undershirt known today developed in the 20th century. First there was the T-shirt, which was originally an undershirt for men. The knotting jersey developed by Schiesser at the end of the 1980s is one of the forerunners of today’s undershirts. In the 50s of the 20th century, underwear made of fine rib and double rib finally developed as well.

Over time, the undershirts developed into more modern variants. So over time the buttons were removed and the selected fabrics became more and more mature. Over time, the T-shirt variant was joined by the carrier variant. The white was more and more replaced by other colours. So more and more undershirts were offered in black or grey and nowadays there are still the classic variants of undershirts. In addition, special undershirts for special requirements are offered in the trade. These are usually called functional undershirts. For example, undershirts can be purchased for the business sector or for sports. Each of these special variants meets special requirements. A business undershirt, for example, must fit particularly tightly because it is worn under a shirt. It shouldn’t be visible if possible. It must also have a special ability to absorb perspiration. Also in the length it differs from a classic undershirt. Since it must not slip out of the suit trousers, it is usually shorter. To ensure that it is not noticed, the business undershirt got a new color, namely the skin color. Since it remains invisible on the wearer, it is also called an “invisible undershirt”. The first invisible undershirt came onto the market in 2008 from the manufacturer ALBERT KREUZ, and the cut-out of the undershirt has also changed over time. Nowadays there are undershirts with a round neckline, undershirts with a button facing and shirts with a V-neck. Special shapes include necklines such as the Deep-V Neck neckline, where one or two buttons on the shirt can be opened without the shirt being visible.

Until the 19th century, white linen was used to make undershirts. Because this material is a material which is cheap and easy to wash. So all underwear was made of linen. It was not until the 19th century that cotton gradually replaced linen. The entire underwear was predominantly white throughout this time. This is the reason why the colour white still dominates in underwear today. This is also the reason why the lingerie shops are called white goods shops. This name was used until the last century, when cotton and other materials were used in the production of undershirts. But cotton is certainly the best material for undershirts. It is a natural material and is best tolerated by the skin. It can also be exposed to higher temperatures during washing.
