Most people take it for granted to open the tap and take a sip of hygienically safe drinking water without worrying about their health. In other countries, on the other hand, this is not something that can be taken for granted. Even in Germany there are farmsteads that are not connected to a central drinking water supply. The aim of water disinfection is to obtain hygienically clean water suitable for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth. What methods are used? That depends first and foremost on what the water is polluted with and what it is to be used for. The requirements for service water for washing, bathing and cleaning are lower than for drinking water. Water disinfection tabletsThese are probably the best known and are used by backpackers or members of the armed forces, for example. The tablets kill microorganisms in the water. There are 2 types of sterilization tablets. Those based on chlorine and those based on silver ions. Chlorine tablets are very effective, but produce the typical taste of chlorine. Agents with silver ions are tasteless, but do not kill the germs, but only prevent their growth. Therefore, they are only suitable for the preservation of drinking water, not for disinfection. Water disinfection tablets are easy to use, but can only kill microorganisms, they do not remove impurities. Water filtersThere are different types of water filters. It is often sufficient to filter polluted water through a thick layer of gravel or sand to obtain clean drinking water. This not only involves mechanical filtration, but also biological clarification of the water. Ion exchangers can remove dissolved ions from the water. They are mainly used to reduce water hardness. Ion exchangers remove unwanted ions such as magnesium or calcium and replace them with sodium ions. Activated carbon is a granulate of very fine-pored charcoal. The grains have a very large surface area and are able to bind a large number of dissolved organic substances. These include, for example, residues of pesticides or medicines. In contrast, salts, lime or minerals cannot be retained by activated carbon filters. Ceramic filtersThese water filters use cartridges made of fine-pored ceramic through which the water is pressed. The pores of the filter are smaller than bacteria, protozoa or fungal spores, which are therefore retained. However, viruses can pass through the pores, although at least their number is reduced. What are the disadvantages of the different methods of water disinfection? None of the methods works perfectly or can remove all types of pollution. In order to obtain safe, edible drinking water, various methods must be combined. Experts recommend, for example, that in most processes the treated water be post-treated with UV light, which kills germs. The cartridges of all filters only work for a limited time. They must then be replaced or regenerated. Ceramic filters must be boiled at regular intervals. If the used filter cartridges fail to do so, they will even contaminate the water instead of cleaning it. For devices that work with electricity, the problem is finding replacement batteries on the go or finding electricity to charge the battery. Are there alternatives to water disinfection? The water can first be filtered through a dense cloth to remove coarse impurities. It must then be boiled for several minutes. Another option is to add a small amount of chlorinated bleach (used for laundry bleaching) to the water. You can also switch to bottled branded mineral water and use it not only for drinking and cooking, but also for brushing your teeth.
