A webcam fulfils various tasks: Skype, video chat via Facebook, Internet telephony and ICQ only work with the camera on the computer. There are already very cheap webcams available, but interested parties should pay attention to the video resolution. Simple HD-ready webcams are already available from around 20 euros, high-quality Full-HD webcams cost more, but also guarantee significantly higher video quality. Sound recording is also crucial: the microphones of very inexpensive webcams are usually not very suitable.

Computer, Notebooks & Tablets: Webcam Video Guide

The modern online communication world can no longer do without webcams. By the way, the term is somewhat ambiguous: a webcam is both a camera on a computer for chatting and a live camera that records pictures and videos for the web from somewhere in the landscape. These include weather cams, but also live cams at sports and cultural events or in wonderful holiday regions. Some farmers use livecams to film their happy pigs and post the videos on the net to illustrate their organic economy. Nature lovers will love the panoramic images from Free Webcams high on the mountains, showing majestic glaciers and rustic mountain stations

Webcams are already built into many computers, especially laptops, but these mini cameras are not expected to deliver superior quality. Therefore many intensive chatters buy an external webcam which is connected to the computer via USB. These models already have an integrated microphone from a low price range, alternatively users can also use a headset. Advantages of a webcam are:

– direct eye contact during chat- possibilities to show something during video telephony- video recordings – such as private YouTube clips – directly on the PC possible- above a certain price range relatively good image and sound quality- convenient recording on the PC

– Picture and sound quality is not quite as good as other cameras – video telephony is not for everyone – good transmission only with good network connection, otherwise jerky pictures and interruptions possible – webcam hacking (spying via the webcam) cannot be ruled out

The webcams are differentiated by type with regard to design and quality as well as use and connectivity. Therefore, there are overlaps. USB webcams are the commercially available models described, which in turn can be Full HD or HD-ready webcams. A distinction is also made between conference cameras, WLAN webcams and IP cameras. Most mini webcams for indoor use, including the webcam already installed in the computer, are HD cams with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. For Skype, ICQ, Omegle Chat or Facebook this is enough for most users. Well-known models include the Logitech QuickCam pro 9000, HD Webcam C270, C310 and 910. Conference cameras are high-quality and very special webcams for video conferences, a well-known model here would be the Logitech CC3000e ConferenceCam with Full HD resolution. Such cameras usually have tilt, pan and zoom functions, so you can still take the best pictures at large conference tables. Hands-free kits with data transmission via Bluetooth and/or NFC are also standard today. WLAN webcams transmit the videos and images wirelessly, IP cameras independently establish the online contact.

A good video resolution in Full HD would always be desirable, but often costs much more than a webcam in HD-ready standard. Buyers have to weigh that first. It is not even self-evident that the HD-ready webcam is much cheaper from the start. It can bring other features that make it more expensive than a Full HD webcam. Prospective buyers must therefore know in principle that the difference between Full HD or HD-ready is decisive for the total price. Another aspect in this context is the possibility to record the webcam images with software. And there it could happen that the webcam records in Full HD, but the software does not process these videos sufficiently. These are so-called webcam recorders. So if you want to purchase a Full HD webcam and record with it, you need the appropriate webcam recorder with the corresponding recording option. The last aspect (besides the price) is the sound quality, which has to be right for higher quality recordings.
