Drugstore articles: Wool Detergent Video Guide
Wool detergent differs from full detergent and colour detergent in the substances it contains. Full detergents, for example, contain bleach and optical brighteners to ensure that the washing power is particularly high. Color detergent, on the other hand, protects the colors of colorful laundry. However, these detergents also contain enzymes called protease. These have a high share in the washing performance.
What are the advantages of wool detergents?
The enzyme protease attacks the sensitive wool fibres, causes pilling and damages the tissue. If wool is washed with a heavy-duty detergent or colour detergent, the garments can suffer considerably and quickly look “old”. Particularly with very fine wool, it must be expected that the fabric will become rough and hard. Wool detergent prevents this because it does not contain any protease. In addition, these agents are pH-neutral and therefore particularly gentle to the fibres
Although the name of the wool detergent is significant, not only wool can be washed with it. Silk and other fine fibres can also be cleaned with it. However, the prerequisite is that these can be treated with brighteners. If other laundry is only slightly soiled, the wool detergent can also be used for white and coloured laundry. However, it should be noted that wool detergent also contains bleach. Colourful garments could therefore lose their colour if the detergent is used permanently and should therefore be cleaned mainly with colour detergent. A mild shampoo can also be used as an alternative to wool detergent or if only one garment is to be washed by hand
Wool detergent is primarily available as a powder and in liquid form. Tests show no significant differences between these forms in terms of efficacy or washing performance. However, powder is usually somewhat more productive and often leaves less residue in the washing machine. Basically, however, you can decide here according to your own preference. It should be noted that especially the liquid detergent should be dosed in small doses. If the selection falls on tabs, the dosing is already preset. That can be practical. If only a few pieces are washed, powder or liquid detergents are the more economical variants.
When choosing wool detergents there is little to consider. First and foremost, it is important that the product is explicitly advertised as a wool detergent. In addition, care must be taken to ensure that the detergent does not contain any protease. In the case of particularly sensitive pieces, no bleaching or whitening agent may be used.
With regard to the powder or liquid form, one’s own preference can decide. Just like the scent. A decisive selection factor, however, should be the suitability for one’s own skin. People with allergies or skin diseases often react sensitively to certain substances, such as fragrances. Sensitiv wool detergents do not contain any potentially irritating substances, making them particularly kind to the skin. The choice of a sensitive detergent can therefore also be useful for children.
