Cycling is the latest trend. The active movement in fresh air stimulates the cardiovascular system and helps to keep the body weight in the optimal range. But if you travel by bike, you should always consider your own safety, because falls with the bike can have serious consequences. The General German Bicycle Club e.V. (ADFC) regularly publishes statistics showing the scale of the problem. In the capital Berlin alone, more than 4,700 cyclists were involved in accidents in 2015. Fortunately, most accidents were relatively minor and the cyclists suffered only minor injuries. However, about 600 cyclists suffered serious injuries and 10 of these fatalities. The head is particularly at risk in the event of an accident with the bike. The range of injuries in the area of the head extends from slight abrasions to craniocerebral trauma. Many of these injuries could have been avoided by wearing a bicycle helmet. A good bicycle helmet is capable of absorbing a large part of the forces acting on the skull in a fall.
The shock-absorbing effect of rigid foam is exploited in the construction of bicycle helmets. With the so-called micro shell helmets, the hard foam inner shell is covered with a thin layer of plastic. This results in a smooth helmet surface that promotes slipping from the ground. This type of construction includes most of the bicycle helmets currently available on the market. Hard-shell helmets are much more stable than micro-shell helmets, in which the inner shell made of hard foam is reinforced on the outside with a stable plastic. The disadvantage of these helmets is the significantly higher weight. This is why hard-shell helmets are mainly worn by athletes on dangerous downhill rides and by mountain bikers in difficult terrain. Just a few years ago, soft-shell helmets were still in use. These helmets consist exclusively of a hard foam inner shell, the surface of which is flocked in colour or covered with a fabric for decorative reasons. These helmets were bought with pleasure for children, because they are very light and look attractive. However, recent research shows that soft-shell helmets do not provide reliable protection. The soft helmet surface hardly slides off the ground, which increases the risk of whiplash injuries.
A good bicycle helmet is not cheap, but the money is well invested, because the helmet contributes substantially to your or your child’s safety. However, this does not mean that the most expensive helmets guarantee the highest safety and the best wearing comfort. Of course, the helmet must look good because a helmet that does not like is probably not used. Before you buy a helmet for yourself or your child, you should meticulously check whether the helmet fits perfectly. The helmet must be comfortable. If the headband is correctly tensioned, the head must not touch any unpadded areas of the helmet. The supplied inner pads are attached in such a way that there are pressure points. Nevertheless, the helmet should sit so tightly even without straps that it does not slip when shaking the head. Place the helmet in a horizontal position and adjust the straps so that the strap in the temple area and the strap coming from the back of the head form a triangle, the tip of which is approximately one finger wide under the ear. The strap with the buckle must be under the chin and must not exert pressure on the neck.
