Even the steam cars from the Australian manufacturer J.A.C. Ziegler had a rear-view mirror. At that time they were supposed to help the driver to observe the water level indicator of the boiler. In 1911 the American racing driver Ray Harroun mounted a rear-view mirror to his racing car for the 500 mile race in Indianapolis. So Ray Harroun could keep an eye on the action behind him without any co-driver. This made the total weight in his race car lighter and he won the race. In 1914, the first car manufacturers, including Ford, began to mount rear-view mirrors on automobiles. On 5.12.1925, the regulation on motor vehicle traffic §4 (8) added the provision that trucks must have a rear-view mirror on the left side. On 1.1.1938 the first Road Traffic Licensing Regulations came into force. According to §56, all motor vehicles, with the exception of open electric carts or motorcycles, had to have a rear-view mirror of sufficient size. On 9.4.1956 it was determined by the §56 of the StVZO that the motor vehicles must have an outside mirror, as well as an inside mirror. At present, §56 stipulates that motor vehicles must have mirrors or other devices for indirect vision so that the driver can observe the traffic situation backwards, sideways and in front of him.

In addition, they have other functions, including:- automatic light or rain sensor, which react to darkness and raindrops;- fare display with taximeter integrated in the interior mirror for modern taxis;- navigation devices integrated in the mirror surface;- integrated compass, motor or sensor combinations for measuring the current orientation and restoring stored positions.4. Exterior mirrors:Since the exterior mirrors are mounted on the outside on the left and right sides and the largest width of a car, this can cause damage to other road users. Therefore, there are already hinged exterior mirrors today. If they come into stronger contact with something or someone, these exterior mirrors open to the window by means of a suspension. You have to unfold them manually. Modern exterior mirrors are adjusted electronically by means of a remote control. No need to roll down the window with it anymore.
