The wire reinforcement of the tires has advantages and disadvantages. A big advantage is the comfortable changing of the tires, which is no problem even for laymen. Unlike tubular tyres, the wire-reinforced tyre is not firmly bonded to the rim. If the tube is now defective, the clincher tire can easily be removed. This allows you to repair or replace the defective hose yourself. This also applies to the tyre itself: If there is a hole or crack in the outer rubber cover or a worn profile, it only takes a few minutes to replace the old tyre with a new one. The low cost of changing the tyres and the low manufacturing costs make the clincher tyre a low-cost bicycle tyre for hobby cyclists and commuters.
A downer is that the wire-reinforced tyre cannot be folded. This means that it is not possible to take the tyre with you on cycling tours as a replacement. Folding tyres have established themselves for this purpose, especially among racing cyclists. These are also wire tires in principle, but instead of solid metal wires flexible and very light aramid threads or Kevlar threads are used. However, this also makes folding tyres considerably more expensive. In addition, they are more difficult to fit than conventional clincher tires because they do not automatically assume the typical round tire shape.
The type of bicycle plays a decisive role in the selection of a suitable clincher tyre. For example, different characteristics are important for a road bike than for a mountain bike or city bike. At high speeds, it is the weight of the tyre that counts. Every unnecessary gram should be avoided. The tyres for racing bikes should therefore be as light as possible, offer good grip at the start and enable high mileage. Good clincher tyres for racing bikes come from manufacturers such as Continental, Michelin and VCYCLE. Weight plays a secondary role in mountain biking. The clincher tires must offer good grip and reliable lateral support on various surfaces. In addition, the tyres should be as insensitive as possible. Whether the tyre should have coarse or fine studs is a question of distance. Coarse studs are important on soft surfaces. They’re preventing the bike from slipping away. On stony ground and paved roads, fine tunnels are ideal. For the city, the clincher should have a balanced tread pattern that provides secure grip and short braking distances in both wet and dry conditions.
