Even the steam cars from the Australian manufacturer J.A.C. Ziegler had a rear-view mirror. At that time they were supposed to help the driver to observe the water level indicator of the boiler. In 1911 the American racing driver Ray Harroun mounted a rear-view mirror to his racing car for the 500 mile race in Indianapolis. In 1914, the first car manufacturers, including Ford, began to mount rear-view mirrors on automobiles. On 5.12.1925, the regulation on motor vehicle traffic §4 (8) added the provision that trucks must have a rear-view mirror on the left side. On 1.1.1938 the first Road Traffic Licensing Regulations came into force. According to §56, all motor vehicles, with the exception of open electric carts or motorcycles, had to have a rear-view mirror of sufficient size. On 9.4.1956 it was determined by the §56 of the StVZO that the motor vehicles must have an outside mirror, as well as an inside mirror. At present, §56 stipulates that motor vehicles must have mirrors or other devices for indirect vision so that the driver can observe the traffic situation backwards, sideways and in front of him.
