Bicycle & E-Bikes: Bicycle brakes Video Guide

The Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) regulate in detail which technical requirements a bicycle must meet in order to be allowed to drive on public roads. Among other things, the legislator stipulates that the bicycle must have two braking systems that operate independently of each other. How these brakes work and how they must be technically constructed is not prescribed, however. Cyclists who want to buy a new brake for their bicycle and are dealing with the subject of bicycle brakes for the first time are usually amazed at how large the selection in specialist shops is. If you want to find the brake that best suits your needs, you should know the differences between the brake types and their advantages and disadvantages.

To brake a rolling wheel, a force must be exerted. In which direction does the braking force act and at which point does this force attack? These are the two most important questions when choosing bicycle brakes. On block and drum brakes, with which many bicycles are equipped as standard, the braking force acts radially. Disc and drum brakes, on the other hand, generate axial braking forces. With the so-called rim brakes, the braking force on the rim attacks. Hub brakes, in which the braking mechanism is located near the wheel hub, are far less common.

If a bicycle is equipped with a rim brake, the braking process can easily be observed: When the cyclist applies the brake, the brake pads are pressed against the flanks of the wheel. The brake pads consist of a rubber compound. The friction between rubber and rim converts the kinetic energy and brakes the wheel. Rim brakes are offered in different designs. Pliers and cantilever brakes are most frequently used. Caliper brakes are also referred to as side pull brakes. A typical feature of this brake type is the caliper-like mechanism. The arms of the pliers are usually moved over a joint. Cantilever brakes, on the other hand, have a separate brake arm on each side of the rim. Cantilever is the English word for cantilever. This type of brake can only be used on bicycles equipped with a so-called Canti base. If this requirement is met, the customer can choose between four different types of cantilever brakes: Center pull brakes are ideal for standard short pull and high force brake levers. U-break brakes are also middle-pull brakes, which can still be found on some mountain bikes. In recent years, however, the trend has been increasingly towards V-break brakes. These brakes have a separate transverse cable and thus generate a higher leverage effect. This type of brake, which is the most widespread today, requires long brake levers.

In the group of hub brakes, disc and back pedal brakes play the most important role. Disc brakes are used particularly frequently on mountain bikes. With this type of brake, the brake pads are pressed onto a disc located in the immediate vicinity of the hub. Hydraulic disc brakes are particularly reliable, with which the braking force can be controlled very precisely. However, the acquisition and maintenance costs are significantly higher than for mechanical disc brakes. Mechanical disc brakes are available in various designs. The classic is the fixed caliper brake. The caliper and piston of this brake type are firmly connected to each other. Brake pads are pressed onto the disc on both sides. Floating caliper brakes, on the other hand, only work with one piston. Today, backpedal brakes have the reputation of being technically outdated. On bicycles for children, however, back pedal brakes are often used because the hands are not needed when braking. Back pedal brakes that function according to the roller principle are considered particularly robust. When braking, two locking elements are pressed radially into the hub. Comet-type brakes consist of three bronze and two steel discs mounted on one axle, which are axially compressed during braking.
