Not only complete bikes, even single components are worth a lot and therefore attract thieves’ attention. Some organised bicycle thieves are on the move – in extreme cases with lots of storage space and a lot of tools. But not only expensive models are affected, when an opportunity arises, any vehicle can be tempting, even if the only aim of the sender is to make faster progress. This makes the right bicycle lock all the more important.
The most common type is the cable lock. It consists of a thick wire mesh which, for optical reasons only, is usually enclosed in a plastic or rubber sheath. Cable locks are available in spiral or straight design. They are relatively light and flexible and attaching one or more bicycles to objects such as trees and lanterns is rarely a problem. The low weight, however, requires a low safety factor: Although the locking mechanism of most models is of sturdy construction, the cable itself can easily be cut with a bolt cutter – or even with a side cutter and a little patience. Therefore, really high-quality bicycles should not be secured for a longer period of time with such a design. Mini cable locks, which usually weigh less than 100 g, are an even more handy alternative and are therefore particularly suitable for demanding racing cyclists. However, these are even more unstable and more than a short visit to the baker should not be undertaken.

One last option is a U-lock that cannot be broken without the use of massive force. They consist of a stiff steel bracket with a locking mechanism. The main disadvantages are the lack of flexibility and transport: without a backpack, these variants are extremely unwieldy.
All in all, the security and budget of the lock should be adapted to the bike, with factors such as flexibility and weight also playing an important role. However, complete theft protection can hardly be guaranteed. If you have a really high-quality two-wheeler with expensive, individual components, a combination of different types is the best choice – especially in unsafe areas. In addition, there are special flex locks which consist only of a thin wire loop. They are extremely light and serve to secure individual parts, especially impellers, but should never be used without additional locks. The cheapest price should generally not be an argument for buying a castle.
