It is well known that the daily brushing of teeth is very important. But even the best toothbrush reaches its limits between the teeth. The bristles just don’t get here. There may be food leftovers. These in turn ensure bacterial growth and gum diseases are favoured as a result. How can this be avoided? The simple solution is dental floss.

In addition to a toothbrush, it makes sense to use dental floss regularly. This is a kind of string. It makes it possible to guarantee optimal oral hygiene. It is very important to clean the interdental spaces carefully. This is simply not possible with a toothbrush alone, because there are areas in the mouth where it does not go. Even the smallest remnants of meals stick in the interdental space and cannot be removed. The toothpick is not an effective aid either. Therefore, the interdental spaces are particularly at risk for caries germination sites. Experts recommend using dental floss for cleaning at least three times a week.

Unclean interdental spaces favour tartar, which forms an optimal breeding ground for bacteria and consequently for caries. The bacteria in the mouth are particularly happy about sugary food. During the digestion of sugar, they produce acids that then attack the enamel. If the acid is not neutralized, caries will develop. The bacteria also form plaque together with the food leftovers. Regular use of dental floss in combination with thorough brushing can prevent germs from entering the enamel and attacking it. This not only avoids painful drilling, but also prevents secondary tooth diseases such as inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) or the tooth bed (periodontitis), which are often associated with it. In addition to pain, this often causes chronic periodontosis, which in the long term leads to gum loss.

On the one hand there is the simple waxed or unwaxed as well as the fluffy dental floss. The use of simple dental floss is recommended for cleaning the gaps between teeth or implants. However, the gums should be very tight. Waxed dental floss glides more easily between the teeth. It is chosen by beginners and people with sensitive gums that are prone to bleeding or other irritations. Unwaxed dental floss should have a better cleaning effect because it is not coated and therefore stronger. Fluffy dental floss, just like unwaxed floss, is well suited for larger interdental spaces. Thanks to the large surface it cleans very well. There is even dental floss with fluoride, which can prevent tooth decay, and dental floss with chlorhexidine, which can reduce caries bacteria.

One end of the silk is wrapped a few times around the index finger of one hand until nothing slips anymore. The other end is loosely wrapped around the finger of the other hand. After brushing the teeth, the dental floss is pushed horizontally between two teeth and stretched around the neck of the tooth. It is then moved up and down, removing food leftovers and plaque. This process is repeated with each tooth. A fresh section should be used for each interdental space. The deposits and bacteria are dissolved during the cleaning process and adhere to the silk. If the used dental floss is placed under the next gum line, the bacteria can enter these areas. Finally, the mouth is rinsed thoroughly to remove the loosened deposits. This can be done either with water or a medical mouthwash.

The use of dental floss is recommended in any case, as it can prevent various dental problems. It also ensures fresh breath. Everyone should try out which one seems the most pleasant and easiest to use. The personal preferences are relatively different in this respect.
