A food bar is a tray or rack in which holders for two or three food bowls are incorporated. The bowls are placed or hung in these holders. This prevents the bowls from slipping or even tipping over during feeding. The food bar itself is made of plastic, wood or metal. The food bowls are also available in different materials. While cheap bowls are often made of plastic, higher quality bowls are made of ceramic or stainless steel.
For cats and smaller dogs there is the food bar as a practical tray. The feeding tray consists of a flat surface on which there are holders for two to three bowls. So that it does not slip away during feeding, it is often provided with rubber studs on the underside. On three sides, a raised edge ensures that water and food lumps are not thrown through the room when eating hastily. Splash water and food remains are held on the tray, which is easy to clean. Models for slightly larger dogs are shaped like a small bench. There are recesses in the horizontal plate in which the cells can be inserted. This variant has the advantage that the feed does not stand directly on the ground. So it is not easy for crawling insects to reach. Besides, the animal doesn’t have to bend all the way down. Especially older pets, which suffer from limited mobility, benefit from this form of feeding. For large dogs there are sturdy metal frames that stand on non-slip plastic feet. The cups can be inserted into two wire loops provided for this purpose on a central spar. The models are usually equipped with height adjustment. The cup is fixed in exactly the desired height by means of a locking screw. Since especially large dogs develop very fast impairments at joints and movement apparatus, a feed station adaptable to the body size is a meaningful acquisition. These models are usually equipped with indestructible stainless steel cups, which can withstand a lot and are easy to clean.
Even if it looks cute when two cats or dogs eat side by side – in practice there is often quarreling and jealousy about food. For this reason, you should purchase a separate feeding station for each pet, which is best placed in separate areas. Most animals eat more calmly, if they don’t have to constantly keep an eye on the feed-competitor. If you offer your pet moist food in addition to dry food and water, a station with three bowls can be useful. However, some animals get used to throwing food into the water bowl. In this case, it makes more sense to place the bowl with water at some distance apart in order to avoid constant pollution of the drinking water. The shape of your favourite muzzle has the greatest influence on the optimum cup depth. Holders of short-snouted breeds such as boxers or Persians should opt for flat bowls with a large diameter. Otherwise, these animals have difficulties with its short muzzles to take up the feed. Langschnauzige races however can be fed quietly from a deep bowl. Very large and old dogs are optimally provided with a height-adjustable feed bar. Choose a stable model that is not easily knocked over. The cups should sit firmly in the holder and reliably withstand the pressure of the dog’s snout.
