Drugstore articles: Electric blanket Video Guide

In the past, when there was no heating or electricity was not yet part of everyday life, hot pans or heated bricks were used on cold days to warm the beds. In the 1920s, the hot-water bottle was invented, which finally replaced this trend. Heating blankets, on the other hand, were invented and produced together with heating pads at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. In addition to warming up the bed or generally keeping warm in the cold, the blanket also serves as a heat therapy, especially for chronic pain. Like any electronic device, there are also possible risks with the electric blanket. However, this is only due to a possible faulty transmission of the switching stages from neutral to phase. The worst thing would be a short circuit. Possible risk would still be that the device would either no longer come on or go off. This is, however, more the case with old models, with new products such a malfunction should not happen only in the rarest of cases.

Heated blankets are heated with an electric heater, in contrast to known heat cushions. The heating blankets contain resistance wires, also called heating wires, which convert the current that is fed into them into heat. The average output is 100-200 watts. The number of resistance wires used can be determined by means of existing on-load tap-changers, and thus how much heat is reproduced. However, the more modern products are more advanced in technology and have a temperature regulator and an automatic switch-off. This safety precaution means that the electric blanket can also be used while sleeping. The wires of the electric blankets are flexible and unbreakable, despite the waterproof insulation of heat-resistant material. This is particularly important in order to avoid short-circuit accidents, such as those occurring in contact with liquids.

Cheap products should always be avoided, since safety (such as the insulation of the heating wires) is often fuscheted to save costs. As a rule, you should only buy electric blankets that have been tested and sealed, or at least there should be no concerns when buying. A recommended top product would be the “Beurer UB75” model. The model has 6 temperature levels, whereby the preheating time is only 15 minutes. It also has an automatic reset, automatic switch-off and overheating protection. It also has a practical washable cover (at 30°C). Products like “Hydas 4652.5.01” or “Medisana HUB” are good quality products with a little less performance and/or functions, but if you want to have it really cosy and warm, you should buy a Kotatsu. A Kotatsu is a table with an integrated electric blanket and is very popular in Japan, especially in winter. If you want to buy a Kotatsu, you can either assemble it yourself or buy it from a trusted dealer. When assembling, a small table, a top of the same size and an electric blanket placed between the table and the top are sufficient. However, it is important not to buy a blanket where there is a risk of overheating. In addition, the electric blanket should not be permanently in operation, but only until the heat has accumulated under the table. The ceiling can then be switched off again. If you would rather buy a Kotatsu, you should ask thoroughly beforehand and be advised. In Germany the purchase of such a product is rather cumbersome.
