The Formicarium: It depends on the distance In the trade different variants of the Formicarium are available. Substrates, soil and pebbles: design and constructionAn ant farm always consists of two different areas. Once the actual farm, where the ants can dig themselves in and enjoy their life, and the so-called arena. The arena is the above-ground part of the ant farm, where ants can hunt their food, store their overburden or bury their dead. As a rule, these two areas are strictly separated, which makes the design much simpler. The formicaria are usually filled according to a fixed pattern. In any case, the soil should consist of an absorbent substrate so that over-moisture of the nests can be prevented. Any commercially available sand can be used as long as it is boiled before use. Only bird sand may not be used in a Formicarium due to its treatment with anise oil. In addition, there are various ready-made nests on the market, which can be easily placed in such a formicarium before the ants colonize it. Food bowls and water sponges: You should pay attention to this: An ant farm lives from the liveliness of its inhabitants. For this reason, the supply of ants plays an important role. Honey and honey water should be offered to ants regularly. However, caution is also required here, as the ants could stick to large drops or even drown in them. The food and water bowls available on the market should therefore be lined with cotton wool or very fine pebbles to ensure a secure hold. If honey water is to be applied, it is advisable to distribute it in many very small droplets on a firm surface. Also with the food-offer, the ants are not choosy. The right food can be found easily in nature with little effort. It is important to pay attention to the type of ant and its distribution areas.
