When setting up an aquarium many important things are needed. In addition to plants, stones and gravel, various decorative objects are also used in an aquarium. The aquarium roots play a particularly important role. They provide for an optical revaluation of the aquarium, bring naturalness into the basin and make hiding places available to the inhabitants.

Everything for animals: Aquarium root Video Guide

Owners of an aquarium are faced with a rather difficult choice. In addition to the shape and size of the aquarium root, there are also different root species. The roots can consist of artificial or real wood and are offered in the aquarium trade in a large selection. In well-assorted pet shops there are aquarium roots made of moorland, mopani and mangrove wood. In general, all aquarium roots are a good spawning and hiding place for the fish in the aquarium. In addition, the roots are very suitable for various aquarium plants and also provide a good substrate for algae. Each type of wood has certain characteristics and therefore has advantages and disadvantages. Before the purchase the owner of the aquarium should inform therefore very well about the different root types.

Aquarium roots from Mopani wood come from Africa and are characterized by a high weight. They are therefore much heavier than roots from other woods. This results in a big advantage, because this root species sinks very fast to the ground and swims only very rarely in the water. In addition, these roots are genuine natural products and do not contain any toxins. If many catfish are kept in the aquarium, for example antenna catfish, then a root from Mopani is not so well suited. The catfish are known for their ability to grate off roots in the aquarium and feed on them. Aquarium roots made of mopani wood are too hard for catfish, roots made of moorland wood are very popular with algae-eating fish and are thoroughly rasped off. For this reason, the roots are ideal for aquariums with antenna catfish. In most cases, the roots do not sink to the ground on their own, because they are lighter than other aquarium roots. So it can happen very well that the owner must anchor the roots to the bottom of the aquarium. If it concerns a very large root, then this can influence the pH-value of the aquarium in the positive sense. Nevertheless, the owners of the aquarium should keep an eye on the pH value so that it does not sink too low. If the bogwood is not in perfect order, then it can contribute to the formation of nitrite in the water. Aquarium roots made of real mangrove wood have very beautiful shapes and are ideal for catfish. The shot-blasted wood retains its natural shape even under water for a long time and provides an optical enhancement of the aquarium. As a rule, the mangrove aquarium roots should sink to the bottom of the aquarium after watering and therefore do not need to be anchored. The roots are very suitable for planting and enrich the appearance of the aquarium with their beautiful reddish brown colour. In addition, the mangrove aquarium roots are available in every well-stocked pet shop and have many different shapes.

Before the aquarium root can be used in the aquarium, a special pre-treatment is necessary. The root must be boiled out and preferably poured over several times with hot water. Alternatively, the aquarium root can also be left in a water bath for about 1 hour at about 80 degrees. This pre-treatment washes the toxins out of the roots and prevents the water from turning brown.
